My daughter and I rode up near Highlands, NC today to see the leaves and the waterfalls. Here are a few of the pictures I took.

Aren't they fun to watch? Though they prefer prey close to the surface, these amazing little birds have been known to dive a little deeper than 3 feet, imagine that. They have even been seen diving through thin ice!

Thanks for the comments, Sarah Lynn. They are fascinating! Guess that's why I'm determined to get a better likeness of her - I believe it is.

I know there is so much to be improved on in this shot- but- it was the first time I had seen him still long enough for me to get a shot of him- so shot from across the lake in scene mode. I could barely see him in the viewfinder. Will keep trying to get a shot in manual with more sharpness and true colors! Love the wildlife!

I like it. Now if I can just improve my photographic skills to do these critters justice!

These were taken this week on my walks in my neighborhood within the city limits in upstate SC. I love sharing the neighborhood with the wildlife.

Thanks Lorenww, Your comments are most helpful. I have been to 1 short workshop and otherwise am learning on my own. I grew up in upstate SC and until the last few years had never seen a heron up in this part of the state. The lake I am on has a great blue family as well as little greens and many other birds I haven't gotten close enough to to shot. I do want to learn and this old brain doesn't hold on to it as well as I would like. I did get a cheat sheet from Old Sarge and will try to put it to use. Thanks for your comments.

Thanks mollymolly, It was the closest I have ever been to one of these an an exciting moment for me. Yes, I was shooting in auto- just learning manual and not enough confidence to go for it in these shots. They were actually taken off my front porch. The heron was by the lake across the street. When I looked out and saw him I just grabbed the camera and shot. if I do a contest, it would be more a local thing. I am thrilled with sx 40 and have so much to learn-nothing but snapshot opportunities before. Thanks for your comments.

Thanks Utah Native. I am not sure why the colors are so overdone. I was shooting in auto as I did not have time to try anything else and was most likely at full zoom. I appreciate your comments.

Here are a few of my favorite photographs of a young heron on the lake near my house. They are taken with a canon sx 40. This is the only time I have seen this young heron and grabbed my camera and started shooting without time to do anything but shoot. Please offer C&C. I posted some of them on my introduction page, but would really like some feedback. His colors appear too brilliant to me. Is that an issue? I have used Picasa with them but he comes out even more pink and blue. In reality he looked more blue-grey.so I am sending the original out of camera shots- I think- on at least most. WIth any suggestions, I would love some instructions. I am thinking of entering them in a contest. Are they good enough? I have also cropped them in other versions and like the cropped versions- more up close and personal- of all but the one that has more of a watercolor feel. Thanks. Lib
