I want to start experimenting with black and white images and I would like to hear from HOGS what they prefer. I can set my D610 to monochrome and then use the various filter to enhance skies and skin tones, or convert color RAW images later in editing programs.
What are your preferences when producing B & W images and any tips for me to try?
Thank you.
Norman

All, or at least most. of the expert advise shooting in color and then converting to B/w in post.

I recently got an e-mail saying my laptop is eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10, but that it still isn't out yet.

Windows is not notifying users of win 10 availability by email. You will get a notice on your desk top. If you got an email notice it was a scam, probably linked to a virus.

What is correct about this statement is that the image is the same size on the sensor. What is not represented well is since the 7DII has smaller pixel size, it packs its 20MP into a smaller area than the 5DIII sensor, so the non-cropped part of the image is going to have more pixels, hence a smooth image. JUST LIKE as if you had zoomed in more on a FF body.

Yes, jimbrown3 was of course correct in saying that a 200mm lens is a 200mm lens on whatever camera it is used, what he did not seem to understand is that the angle of view is a function of the sensor not the lens, and therefore changes with the camera. I am sick of camera snobs who deprecate any camera not a full frame. Different cameras have different strengths. Even the lowly point and shoot may at times be the camera of choice. The real Photographer knows the strengths and weaknesses of his or her equipment and uses it accordingly.

I have known cats who would have liked one. Had one who was very fond of open books.

I have the 5D III and the 7D II. Taking into consideration your question, I get better results with the 5D III cropped to the dimensions of the 7D. Regardless of some of the comments; a 200mm lens is a 200mm lens. The magnification/angle of view is the SAME on both size sensors. If shooting a bird, for instance, the bird will be the same actual size on each sensor. The only difference is the crop sensor has cropped the image around the bird.

That is nonsense. "Cropping the image around the bird" is changing the angle of view.

Try Recuva or others.

One thing I like about upper level Nikons is their dual slot system. I can have a Lexar in slot 1 and have it back up to an SD in slot 2. Two slot/two brands. It's like the pilot and copilot eating different meals on a flight.

The Pro level Canons also have a two slot system, very useful.

thought about win 10.
i have DSL.
How many hours would it take to download the upgrade?

It took me about half an hour after the files had down loaded in the back ground on a not to fast DSL connection. It is a fast mach ion however.

Sorry..Yes I missed that one totally. Not sure of what programs or data you have on the SSD I would be hesitant any more suggestions.

I can tell you that I have installed Win 10 on SSDs. One running Win 8.1 one Win 7. No trouble with either. However I did the up grade from the Windows down load not from an installation disk, so far I have not been able to burn one.

I had created an Administrator user in 10. When I try to use the restore function it says I have to delete that Admin user by going to settings>users and remove it. The problem is that the admin user does not show up in the list of users. It only shows my user name. So I can't delete it. That basically leaves me with no way out to go back to 8.1. If you have a solution, I'd like to hear it.

When you log on there should be a user list in the lower left corner of the screen. Try logging in as admin and then try to run roll back. If there is an administrator it may be that no one else can run roll back. If you can't find the admin try creating a new one. Good luck.

Windows 10 is not working the way I want and has some things that don't work, that are deal breakers. I simply want to go back to 8.1 but I can't get the rollback option to work. After 30 days that option goes away.

There is no way to talk to a real person at Microsoft or a way that I can at least report the problem I'm having because there is not customer service. I'm simply fed up with their lack of support and response. Apple offers tremendous support.

I would go with max memory and an I7 processor (extra cost) if I go this way. So the Imac would be comparable to what I have now. Believe me I don't take potential this change lightly. I've used Windows for years through all the issues in each version. I made a mistake going to 10. Now I can't go back unless I refresh my whole machine, as a last resort.

Do you still have the C:Windows.old folder on your computer? If you do you should be able to go to "start", "Settings," "Updates and Security," "Recovery," and restore WIN 8.1. What happens when you try this?

Was looking at one of these for photo editing. I currently have a PC with Intel I5, 20gb ram, 2TB storage (really only 1.5 usable due to recovery partition).

This is the model I'm considering Apple - 21.5" iMacĀ® - Intel Core i5 (2.7GHz) - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard

Would it be powerful enough to handle LR and PS editing tasks fast? Seems like I'd be giving up memory and storage.

You would also have the same processor that you have now. I don't see what you would gain. Why don't you keep the computer you have now and upgrade to Win 10. I have three computers running it and I am impressed. Everything even the old software runs great.

It depends... On Nikon yes all can be. On Canon, it depends on the lens mounts. Some of the Canon lenses will not work on other Canons DX or FX. I am not sure which go to which others but some of the Canon guys can clarify that.
As for othe manufactuerers again it depends. Many will not. That is one of Nikon's major advertising statements is that All Nikon cameras and lenses are compatible and have been since the 1970's or so. They claim that they are the only manufacturer that can make that statement. A word of caution though: Some of the lower end Nikon cameras, specifically what Nikon calls the Entry Level cameras (the 3xxx line and the 5xxx line .. that is the 3000, 3100, 3200, 3300, 5000, 5100, 5200, 5300, 5500 etc.) do not have a focus motor in the camera so unless the lens has a buil-in focus motor, you will have to manually focus it.. But it will still fit and work other that not autofocusing. The Nikon Enthusiest Level (D7000, 7100 D600, D610, D750and 7200 and DF) plus the Professional level (the D800, D800e, D810, D810a, D3, D3x, D4, D4s) all have the focus motor in the camera and all lenses will work. The list I provided are current and near current Nikon models but it holds true through the entire line.. I have an old D70s (the earlier realative to the D7xxx) that also has the focus motor built into the camera.
It depends... On Nikon yes all can be. On Canon, ... (show quote)

First: use the terms "Full Frame," and "APS-C" FX and DX are Nikon terms.

Second: all Canon ef lenses can be used with all Canon Cameras; however, ef-s lenses, lenses designed for APS-C cameras should not be used with Canon full frame cameras, as this could result in damage to the lens and or the camera. It would also result in vignetting on any full frame camera even if the lens would mount. I would suggest that it is best not to give information when you do not know what you are talking about.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me can clairify, but I think I read that, while the upgrade is free for a year, Windows is going into the cloud and you will be charged a monthly fee for using it after that. Is this correct?

NO it is not correct.
