The Senate majority leader boasts about stacking the courts with conservative judges under Trump.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday night bragged about blocking President Barack Obama’s attempt to fill federal judicial vacancies for two years. Then, he laughed about it as he discussed the Republican Party’s effort to stack the courts with conservative judges under President Donald Trump.

“I was shocked that former President Obama left so many vacancies and didn’t try to fill those positions,” Fox News host Sean Hannity said to McConnell.

Obama didn’t leave those vacancies so much as he was blocked from filling them by a GOP-controlled Senate led by McConnell ― something the majority leader was quick to point out.

“I’ll tell you why,” he said. “I was in charge of what we did the last two years of the Obama administration.”

Then, he laughed:

Hannity: "I was shocked that former President Obama left so many [judicial] vacancies and didn't try to fill those positions."

Mitch McConnell: "I'll tell you why. I was in charge of what we did the last two years of the Obama administration. [Creepy evil laugh]"

“I will give you full credit for that, and by the way take a bow,” Hannity said. “All right, that was good line!”

McConnell not only blocked federal judges, he prevented Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland from even getting a hearing. In 2018, McConnell told Kentucky Today that the decision to block Garland’s appointment was “the most consequential decision I’ve made in my entire public career.”

Trump eventually filled that seat with Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch, one of his two Supreme Court appointees.

Trump has had an even bigger impact on the federal courts as a whole. As Vox reported, more than a quarter of all active judges on the courts of appeal are now Trump appointees. In fact, Trump has named nearly as many judges in his three years in office (48) as Obama did during his 8-year presidency (55).

It seems like the words "dramatic" and "bombshell" are thrown around a lot in reference to the impeachment inquiry hearings, but if there were ever a time to use them, it would be to describe yesterday's testimony from US Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland. Right out of the gate, Sondland confirmed that, yes, a "quid pro quo" scheme existed and President Trump directed it. He also said "everyone was in the loop" about what was going on with Ukraine foreign policy, implicating top officials including Vice President Mike Pence. Sondland's testimony punched several gaping holes in the Trump administration's defense of the Ukraine saga. For one, Sondland said he got the impression Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky didn't actually have to conduct the investigations; he just had to announce them. If he's correct, that lends credence to the theory that the probes were simply a political maneuver. Sondland's testimony was especially important for Democrats because he is one of the main witnesses to have had direct contact with the President during the time of the Ukraine dealings.

Has anyone visited the "ghost town" of Bodie, CA? This old gold-mining town is a state park, preserved in a state of "arrested decay." My husband and I live about 4 hours by car west of Bodie, and are thinking of making a photo trip to the area next week (if it ever stops raining). The eerie photographs I've seen show homes, a Chinese laundry, a bank, a church, a stable and numerous other buildings all maintained as if the inhabitants had suddenly vanished. The pictures have one thing in common: there are no people in them, making me suspect they were taken when the park was closed. My question is this: is it possible to take pictures of the buildings without including hordes of tourists or is the park simply too crowded? Thank you.
