When cropping my shots, I generally try to leave open space in front of where the subject is facing. In this shot, I'm not quite sure if I like it that way. It cuts off the trail of water and just doesn't have quite the same feel, but what do I know. So, here's three different crops. I'd love to hear your opinions and see which ones you like best. How would you crop it?

I like 2..........no, 3........no, 2..............ok, definitely 3!

Thanks, now ....4 : )

You are correct in that "generally" it is a good idea to leave open space in front; however, this is a time when the general rule needs to be broken in favor of the pathos of the image. Yes this bird in the third crop looks like he is going to slide off of the image. . .which is the very energy and interest contained in number three.

The bird knows this, and he is doing his level best to stop, hence an image that offers up it own title: Whoa!

Edit: I just had a brain storm for a funny variation of crop number three. Would love to give it a try; however, not without permission to do so. ???

Looks like your shutter speed was too long. I get my best moon results with the following settings:

1/800
f/10
ISO 800

Great to see another Alpha Shooter!!!!

Wow, that looks like it was taken with the Hubble Tele. LOL. really nice!

You don't see better than this in National Geographic. These are shots most of us don't get in a lifetime. What glass are you using?

Awe, thanks, but I really think the NG photographers have a lot up on my equipment. I did tell a friend that has amazing cameras and lenses that the eaglets were hatched and he'll be going soon to get some shots. Can't wait to see them.

I'm using a canon L series 100-400 IS. I'll add an extender once I can master some manual shots.

They all can work depending on the mood or message you're portraying. Look at photogrl's post under General photo discussion titled: "Rule of Space in Photography" for the rationale for each.
I like your #3 shot here.

Thanks Rocco. It took me a while to find it. (Haven't quite found my way around this forum yet.) That was just what I needed to read.

Ugh, I'm sorry guys. You're quick! lol. I didn't have one of them cropped enough and had to delete and re-attach. Now I don't know if you're talking number 1 when it was almost off the frame or when it just landed.

You warned me, the title was clear, I just couldn't believe it. I thought they only ate fish. Why oh why did I have to look? Really amazing shots, but now I feel bad for the grebe & chicks possibly in it's nest. My own fault. Thanks for posting... I think :)

Great shot! I love the way it's cropped with the ducks swooping all around. Poor duck though, guess we all have to eat.
