Jack has become a gentleman now, he has really mellowed in his older age! He and I get along great.

Thank you Jim for taking a look. I really appreciate the comments. I actually already have a Tamron 150-600 lens so I am not presently looking to extend my reach. Eventually I am sure I will invest in more L glass but for now I am going to be satisfied with what I have and working towards getting a full frame body.

For landscape a 6D is fine. For wildlife or birding get a 5D-III. Got one last fall and love it! I think it gets more use than my 7D-II does.

and these are my first test shots. I was only shooting in my backyard so the subject matter is not overly fascinating but I am impressed with its ability to capture colors very true to life and I am doing little to no sharpening in pp. The lens is the Canon EF 24-105mm 4.0 L IS USM. Please enjoy.

Nice shots. That is a nice walk around lens. Now get a 1.4X TC and work towards a 100-400mm or 400mm lens. With the TC you will get a 560mm lens.

Thank you will link, I had heard that song in ages.

I read the remark about him being black. A lot of people didn't realize it until they saw him. You to give him a lot of credit. He could sing! I got into one heck of an argument with a friend of mine because he didn't believe me when I told him that. Saw him the next day and he had to apologize to me, LOL!

I love the Daniel Brothers! When you put the two of them together you got a good night!

You know the brothers, Jack and Charlie.

Does it make a difference if I get a lens that is f2.8 or larger as compared to an f4 since now with digital the graininess is not as prevalent as it was with during the film days. Or can I get the cheaper f4 lens and adjust the ISO to compensate? It is only one stop. During film that made a big difference but with digital it seems to not be so dramatic.

Yes, it is true you can make up one stop fairly easily by adjusting the ISO. But eventually you get a Catch-22, the higher the ISO the higher the noise.

I shoot a late night rodeo at times and would adjust my ISO to a higher speed as it would get darker. It would eventually reach a point where I could not get good photos. I started using my Sigma 120 – 300 mm lens which is an F2 .8 lens. This allowed me to lower my ISO that one stop and it was enough to eliminate a lot of the noise and let me get decent shots.

A lot depends on how much light you have to work with and what body you are using. If you were using a full frame it may not make that much difference but I often shoot with my 7D II and believe me when I say using an ASP-C body it can make a difference.

Last year I tried to get a shot of a green Heron and the only time I could find him was in the very dim light in the morning. In order to get the shot I had to put on my f2.8 lens. Without it and just by jacking up the ISO the photo looked almost black and he blended in very well!

All depends on the conditions you are shooting and what you're shooting.

If you haven't thought of it already, you may also want to consider a good monopod. Offers more stability than you would think at first blush and can double as a walking stick.

Happy shooting and enjoy your trip!!

Recently I picked up a tripod from MT that I really like. One of its very nice features is that it can be converted into a monopod. It is carbon fiber so fairly light weight and straps to my back pack for when and am able to take a walk

Considering it is carbon fiber the price is not bad. You can contact Carter (MT) at:

I have shot Yellowstone since 1969, with a WIDE variety of lenses. These days my favorite Landscape lens to use there is my Nikon 24-120mm VR Nano on a full frame body. My second lens is always the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 on a second full frame body.

You have got to love the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 lens!

I originally bought it for one specific purpose, a late night rodeo, but find I use it quite often on both type of bodies. It is an excellent lens.

NOTE: Sense getting the Sigma I have found I use the Canon 70-200mm much less than I did.

Question, sense you have the 17-85mm lens why are you considering a 24-70mm? Your 17-85mm lens would be a good companion to the Sigma 120-300mm. Yes, it would leave a gap but it is not that big.

Is that "older" backup hardware getting near retirement age? They recommend replacing hard drives after four years, although I've never had one fail.

Jerry,

It doesn't think so. I bought it use with an "older" Netbook about 7 or 8 years ago. I only use it in the trailer because it is so small and doesn't need a power supply of its own. It fits in my shirt pocket. Here is the new version of it. I am thinking of replacing but....

What kind of systems to hoggers use to transfer images from SD cards to backup storage devices? Ideally, when traveling, I would like to download images at night simultaneously and automatically to two MyPassport backup devices, via a laptop. I read about some software (either PC or Mac) that would allow this, but cannot find it. A search on this site was not fruitful, but I didn't go through everything that popped up.

I have a spare, my older laptop, I keep in my trailer which I download to every night. Then every night or two I copy to an older .5 gig external for when I get home to transfer to my main laptop. After I do the transfer I delete everything off the .5 gig external so it is clean for the next time I go out. This gives me a back-up for when I am on the road.

I keep a copy of LR on my older laptop so I can work with my photos at night if I want. This gives me a good use for my old laptop, it is 7 years old, which still runs good.

Yeah. According to the Sigma site, the Contemporary weighs just over 68 ounces and the Sport just over 100 ounces.

So the "C" is 4.25 pounds, just a hair lighter than Tamron which is 4.3 pounds.

I would assume the "C" is lighter than the sport but have not found the weight listed for it. Have you seen it listed anywhere?
