After reading your piece on the Leica camera, I became very curious who this Roger Hicks is. So in true police investigative manner, I Googled 'Roger Hicks.' First up was Roger Hicks Ministries, that didn't fit, next up was Roger Hicks, noted photographer, author, and magazine article contributor. WHAT?? Our Roger Hicks an author? Than it fit your eloquent style of writing and thinking, of course. How could I have missed that?
It had a reference to Wikipedia. Roger Hicks is no stranger there either, this is what it had to say about our fellow not so ugly hedgehog:
Roger Hicks is a British author of more than 30 photography books,[1] plus a biography of HH Dalai Lama, travel books, cook-books and others. Many are written with his wife Frances Schultz. He is a regular contributor to Amateur Photographer Magazine[2] and frequently writes for Shutterbug magazine in the United States.

My sincere congratulations to you Sir on your accomplishments and a most sincere thank you for spending time on this forum to lend a hand.

I knew he wrote books about photography...But not the others...Travel...Cookbooks...And The Dalai Lama???
I recently purchased his e-book about choosing tripods and there was a ton of great info in it and some great tips too... And he has a sense of humor too!!! And he finds time to help us here on UHH too...
I would like to meet him if he ever makes it to this side of the pond...

Done a search, can't find it. I assume you have to remove the battery door to install a battery grip on a Nikon D90 or D7000. How do you remove the door? Please no nasty stupid remarks.

I'm not sure about Nikons but on a Canon there is a spring loaded pin at the hinge point. Open the battery door and where the hinge is there should be a pin that just slides back, You should be able to slide it back with your fingernail... Hope this helps...

Anyone use the batterY grip on their Canon... Like to hear the pros and cons....

Yes I do...I love them especially if you are using your flash a lot. The only downside is they do add weight. The grip itself and then the two batteries...
I shoot several hundred pics a day during ball season. ( my nephews and nieces play ). Not having to change batteries is very convenient for me. If you a using a monopod or tripod then no problem...
When I first bought my Xti, I was changing batteries so I purchased one after a couple of months. My sister still uses the same setup. I now have a T3i & 5D MKll and as soon as I purchased them I bought the grips and extra batteries for them.

C-A-N-O-N!!! Why or why do people have an issue with spelling it correctly?

A Cannon goes "BOOM"
A Canon goes "CLICK"

Hey MWAC...My Glock goes "BOOM"....and my Canons go "CLICK" too

Comments are welcome. Just we need to keep it clean.

I have a silver Canon Rebel and I was
thinking of painting it Black, so I could
blend in and be equal with other shooters.

Case in point: One day at the dog park
I'm shooting dogs racing around.
This lady enters the park with a nice
Black Nikon and starts taking pictures.
She was on full Auto, shooting into the sun
and looking down at the dogs.
And folks were so happy that she would
take a picture of there dog and the email
address started flying.
I sudgested to the lady that she move to
a spot where she was at the dogs level,
shoot at 125-250, and do a lot of planning
with multi shot burst. And to give the dogs
someplace to run.
Giving the dogs a place to run seem to get
everyone upset. Soon she was gone and
it seem my fault.
So that is why I was thinking of painting
my camera Black.
I do thank you all for you kind thoughts.
For those that thought I should be in the
nut ward, I'll see you there.

OK So we all love UHH. We start our day and may end our day with UHH.
UHH are a good friends and lovers. Does not get mad at us, and forgives are short comings
(Well un less I do them).
So instead of getting a T-shirt with UHH log, how about a UHH tattoo on you neck.
Come on, if you really love something it is the way to go.

Then forgive yourself, and sleep.
And dream of all the things you have done.
Of all the things you have seen.

Hummmm... Been thinking about getting another one...any ideas as to the design?? then we would know each other when out and about.. Dont think I want it on my neck though..

3 hrs work for 650.00? What a rip off. and you don't even feel quilty? I guess more power to you if someone is dumb enough to pay that.

Thank you for voicing your opinion that my work is a "rip-off" but when I'm called on a Friday afternoon in a panic and my help is needed on a project that has to be submitted to their client by opening of business on Monday, you better believe I am billing top dollar. Not only did a create custom graphics, but a custom brochure, including all the literature and content, and started the layout and look for his new company branding (which I will finish as part of the on-going products he has for me). I also had to cancel family plans to get his project completed.

I also know that when the business is up and running smoothly and revenue is steady, I will have a position on their staff if I desire. A regular salaried position would be wonderful, cause even thou I billed $650 dollars for 3 hours work, I have to pay the taxes on that and my next "pay cheque" from them could be 1, 2, 3 or more months away.

WOW...ONLY $650.00?? sounds like YOU gave them an awfull BIG discount..I know there is no way they would be able to get that done any cheaper even with a couple of weeks leadtime...And you had to cancel family plans... I have seen some of your photographs posted up here and if the brochure is half as good then you were underpaid..

OK here's the deal:

Hobo Hedgehog is seeking a trip around the world on the cheap (for him anyway). I'm going to start a sign up list of people on this thread who want to host Hobo for 10 days to 2 weeks and show him around where they live. Then the current host will Private Message the next person on the list, get a mailing address and pass him on to the that person. He wants to get around the world but expects to criss-cross larger, heavily populated countries along the way and is prepared to cross large bodies of water more than once, he is a hobo after all. The current host is responsible for all shipping charges to the next destination, Hobo is a hobo after all and doesn't have any money.

Hobo is very photogenic so I would ask you to post your 3 favorite shots of his stay with you on this thread but as many as you want on a different thread that you start yourself.

The list on this thread would consist of host name and general location (city, state, country). Actual physical addresses would be sent between current host and next host on the list by PM only! Hobo is hinting that he owes some people some money and doesn't want to be easily found but does want to taunt the 'bill collectors' with photos of where he has been ;-). but not specifically (street address) where he is headed.

The Rules

1. If you sign up, please keep him traveling and don't break the chain. If you have a crazy two weeks with bad weather while you are his host perhaps some photos of him at your kitchen table, watching TV, or even posting on UH will do. Not everybody can get a shot of him at Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, or the Empire State Building.

2. Don't add or subtract anything from the package. You should receive Hobo, his bundle on a stick and a list of people and locations where he has been in a reusable cardboard box. If the box gets wet or damaged beyond repair, by all means replace it, but only when necessary.

3. Have fun, show him around your area, maybe even that place that you keep telling yourself you will go to someday, go there with him. Activities are good too, weddings, birthday parties, holiday celebrations, anything goes, he is a bit of a party animal.

To sum up: Keep him moving on down the line. Don't add or subtract anything from the package. Have fun, take lots of photos and post your favorite three photos here.

Any questions? Ask away! I'll start his first two week stint here in Jonesborough TN and then send him on to his next destination.

He is eager and ready to go soon.

Eric

Yes I purchased the remote control however I got mine from 47st photo off e-bay and paid $14.95 with free shipping. Its about $10.00 more from that site that you are at.

I have used this remote a couple of times and it has worked fine.

I have 18 years worth of pics/negs from all over the U.S., including 15 national parks. I'm looking for a solution to turn negs into digital files. I paid someone once to do one image, but wasn't thrilled with the results. Is it better to have the image scanned, or the negative? What type of questions should I ask the person doing it for me? What kind of resolution should I expect/ask for? I read somewhere of someone who puts his negs on a light table, and photographs the negs. Has anybody tried/heard of this? I have so many amazing pics, I'd hate to not be able to add them to my site. I wish I had the money, I would love to solve the problem by taking all those trips again. :D

HSN has a scanner that does real good at scanning photos...

http://electronics.hsn.com/vupoint-magic-wand-ii-portable-scanner-with-color-lcd-preview-screen-pewter_p-6631283_xp.aspx

Its a Viewpoint Magic Wand. It's about $100.00 but mine works great. I've had it for about three months and haven't had any problems.
You can also go to ebay and search in cameras for"negative scanners" and you will get dozens of hits. The prices range from about $50.00 and up past $500.00...
I have never used one of the negative scanners so I'm not sure how well they work. If you get a 30 day return then you could try one and if your not satisfied then you could always return it.

Don’t want to be just a shooter:

I am trying so hard to be more of an artist and not just a shooter. But sometimes I just get wiped out by the whole thing and just shoot. My mom was an artist and so are both of my sons. I look at fine art and don’t see anything.

I do read the photo magazines and any books I fine. But they don’t seem to teach one to be an artist.

Anyone have any ideas on how one can become a artist?

Just shoot what YOU like...What makes YOU feel good...Don't worry what others think if you like it then do it...Im sure Picasso didnt care what others thought about his "strange" paintings...And now they sell for millions...If some people don't like what you shoot then just let them know that you do and thank them for their opinion...Just always be true to YOURSELF...
