Sorry about the spelling error, should be Paint the Moon. Don't know how to correct it now that it's been posted.

I have been following this photographer on FB for awhile. He was chosen by Nikon to shoot for the new Nikon D750. Interesting article about his experience. Thought I would share http://www.joshuacripps.com/2014/09/on-assignment-for-nikon-d750/

I see people taking photo's of bugs all the time, and until now didn't realize how difficult that can be, the wind was my problem yesterday, getting this guy in focus was a real trick, it's web was strung between two evergreen bushes about three feet apart. the slightest breeze threw the focus out. Had to take a dozen hoping to get one of two that were in focus, this is the best I could get,
no post work just a little cropping

Canon 6D
Tamron 150-600mm (on tripod) @ 12 ft
Remote flash

and a little luck..

Years ago when my husband was shooting film we woke up one morning to find a spider had spun a magnificent web over an entire window. He was having the same problem..then he thought to spray the entire thing with water with a fine mist spray bottle. Not only was it beautiful, but the water was just heavy enough to keep it moving. Just a thought.

Jeep daddy, very well put! I agree with the analogy. We all have our preferences in most things we buy, especially "enthusiast" products (like cars and cameras), where specs AREN'T the driving force (pardon the pun) behind a buying decision. It's a combination of performance, feel, looks and (sometimes) product-ownership prestige that tip the decision to one model over another. ;-)

Thank you for your response.....Did I mention that I'm also trying to decide between a Renegade or Sport Jeep Wrangler?

cm, I know you're new here, so to you, so are all of us.
Nobody looks at 600mm lenses cause they shoot things that don't move!
I'm a hard-core FF shooter, but I also do a lot of sports.
My next camera was easily going to be the 5lll.
BUT, I've also been looking at the new 7ll. That darn thing is almost as much camera as the 1dx, with possibly a more sophisticated focus system for 1/3 the price!!
In sports/action/birds etc., mp count oftentimes takes a backseat to what is actually possible to capture. I'll admit the possibilities presented by 10 fps and 61 cross focus points could well be the difference between landing a killer shot and just wishing, if only it was in focus. cm, a billion mp won't help you if you don't get the shot!! Mp's is a luxury, not a necessity.
Personnally, I'm toying with the idea of leaving FF just because of the new 7ll. Plus, the idea that a 600mm is suddenly a 960 with no cropping can't be ignored, when a bird is only the size of a golfball and it's 20 feet away.
cm, don't rule out getting an old 7dl for $500-$600 just to get your feet wet then decide between on a 7ll or a 5lll.
For me, the lines have suddenly become very blurred!
cm, if you click on my name, then on my created topics, you'll find a few of my shots. That will give you an idea where I'm coming from.
As the proof is always in the pudding!! ;-)

I spent half the day reading what I could find re the 7ii.
Wish they'd just ship the darn thing to someone so we can hear how it measures up to the 5iii. 61pts got my eye. I want to make a decision before the only thing I can shoot is snow.

If you have decided to go with a Canon full frame, and if you have ruled out the 1Dx, and if your type of shooting can make use of it, and if your budget can cover it, go with the 5DIII. The 6D is an excellent camera, but the more I use mine the more I realize that it is borderline for moving subjects. The more I shoot the more moving subjects I find to shoot. Kind of a vicious circle.

Thank you, I needed to hear that. It' s what I'm trying to avoid.

Even though the 1DX has less rez than the 5DMk3, it's images have slightly less noise, especially at higher ISOs.
The 5DMk3, for the money, is an excellent camera in the Canon line, if you're in the FF market. But, there is nothing like a 1DX... Truly.
And, it can shoot sports/ action with aplomb. :D

I've got a headache ....I'm going to bed and have a nightmare of standing on the rocks at the shore with a new sigma 150-600 and no camera attached to it when the next hurricane hits... and before you ask, yes, I almost got swept away using a lens that didn't have enough reach...live and learn.
Thanks everyone.

Thank you! That's good to hear from a dx user. This choice is looking better and better.

I totally agree with wanting to put the extra $ into lenses. I think sensor size is a bigger factor than mp count, as the 5D Mark III has a full frame sensor and the 1D Mark IV has a APS-H (1.3x smaller) sensor. The 5D Mark III does not really have "a high mp count", these days 16-24mp is "normal". :-)

At 22.3mp, the 5D Mark III has less than 20% more linear resolution than the 16mp 1D Mark IV. That's basically going from a 20x30" print to a 24x36" print. Yes, it's better, but if you have either print on the wall few people are going to notice which size it is.

Thank you for that feedback. I have to admit that I am a very visual person and that equates to looking at 100's of photographers shots , deciding which I like best and asking them what they used for equipment vs comparing all the specs. Now before you jump, I'm well aware that the lens and the person on the button is 90% of a good shot. I think I"m narrowing it down. It would be easier if there wasn't video capability confusing the issue. I am 100% not interested in that aspect.

Ok, I posted before I saw this.

You seem to have narrowed it down to three choices:
1. 5D Mark III
2. 6D
3. 5D Mark II (used)

Are you looking at the Sigma 150-600mm "Sports" version? I'm pretty sure SS and I will agree that the 5D Mark III is better than the other two cameras for sports/action photography. Or, to put it better, I'll agree with SS on that. :-D

Yes I do like what I've read re the 'sport', waiting for feedback when that hits the shelves. I agree that the mark ii is out . just started to spec out the 6d so I can't respond to that.

What are you upgrading from? If it is any other 1D-series camera, and you can accept the size and cost of those, then it seems that the 1DX is a pretty easy choice.

I've been fortunate in that I have had the opportunity to use many different cameras in both the canon and nikon lines because of a family full of photographers. I think at this point I know I would like to utilize $'s for a great line of lenses and not the dx. I've been looking toward the 5dmarkiii and the 1dmarkIV. But #mp keep getting in the way( I like the idea of a high mp count) and I don't know enough about sensors.

Well I've only signed on for about a week and already I know without a doubt that I will choose a Canon FF, and I will get the new Sigma 150-600 and an L lens. 1dx is too much on too many levels...so at least that's crossed off the short list.
