Here are a few pictures from our cruise we took to the Bahamas, St. Thomas & St. Marten. I only got a few sunset pictures, it was cloudy most days. Let me know your thoughts.

I live in Eastern SD and we go to the Black Hills quite often. Mt. Rustmore is impressive everytime we go. Take a tour of a cave, I recommend Wind Cave in Custer State Park. There is also the wildlife loop to drive in Custer State park where you will get good pics of buffalo, donkeys, and if you're luck big horn sheep. If you want neat scenery, drive the Needles Highway, unless you get car sick. If you do get car sick, get some dramamine, not many straight roads out there. One thing I have yet to do is climb Harney Peak. Check it out on the web. The view from up there has got to be awesome!! Looks like a good photo opp. for up there. Hope this helps, and have fun!!

Here goes: I am taking my first trip out west in July. I will be photographing scenery, Indian reservations, and of course all the good stuff like Mt. Rushmore and the Badlands. My dilemma: I only have enough to purchase two necessary things - One of which is a new lens and a tripod that is good quality, but light enough for me to handle when shooting outdoors. Budget is a huge concern, but I want to purchase good quality. This is the equipment I have --
Canon T3, Lenses: 18-55mm Kit Lens, Tamron 75-300mm Standard Telephoto, Canon 50mm lens, 58mm Wide Angle lens and 58mm 2x Telephoto lens. (All came with the kit)

Well, everyone, have at it!!!

I recently purchased a B + W circular polarizer for a trip we will be taking soon to some sunny destinatios. I have taken a few shots with it, and they are of course darker. Any hints on using my new filter?

Best tips are to practice with it HEAVILY so you instinctively know when it will improve a scene, and when it won't! Know your filter as well or better than you know the lens you will use it on. And don't be afraid to try it on scenes you may not at first think it appropriate for, it can really bring out color saturation in the right situations. The biggest mistake most photographers make is OVER-using the CP. Use it judiciously, but LEARN and enjoy the effects it can give, you have a very good CP there.

You really have to look through the viewfinder and turn the filter until you get the affect you are looking for. There is no right or wrong way. Pay attention to water and sky. To remove glare, watch the water surface as you turn... When the glare disappears, then you are ready to shoot. Likewise with the sky---when the sky turns dark blue, you'll know it.

Also, keep in mind that polarizing filters work best when the sun is at a 90 degree angle from the horizontal plane of your lens. Therefore, if you are looking for the deep blue sky, then you'll want to take shots between 11am and 1pm.

A final tip. It's very hard to see the affects through the viewfinder when you are wearing sun glasses (most have polarizing lenses as well). Of course, during high noon, sun is when you'll want to be wearing them. I usually have to take my sun glasses off to compose a shot. Very annoying.

Here's a shot I took with mine slightly before noon.

Thanks! That one is my favorite too. The tree shot is pretty, but doesn't have a wow effect.

Thanks, Linda. You live in a wonderful place for great picture taking. We were out to the Hills this weekend for just a short time. Took my camera, but never fired a shot! Sad! We were with friends, and I hate to take up their time with my "habit" Have you posted any of your photos on here?

Yeah, I noticed the powerlines too when I was shooting, I do not have photoshop or something similar, so it had nothing done to it. Powerlines do nothing for it, that's for sure. Thanks for the suggestions!

I thought your first picture was almost perfect: nice composition, subject, perfect depiction of frost.

The second one, in my opinion, needed a bit more pp. Try reducing your mid-tone contrast slightly and reducing the highlight brightness a bit, and lightening the shadows a touch. I think you will like how the frosted tree pops out against the sky without looking overdone.

Oh, and kill the power lines.

Yes, he certainly had a hand in creating the beautiful morning. Not sure I could explain it well to the kids why mom is "special" and can skip, but they can't! HA!
