what does the cost of the electric on standby come to over a year not to mention the cost to the environment

I don't know about the electricity costs, but I wouldn't think it would be *that* much - all it's doing is keeping a small LED lit up...

Canon have advised me to leave mine turned on all the time, because when you switch it back on, it goes through a cleaning cycle which will waste ink.

Turning your question around, how much does it cost to replace ink cartridges more often? And what is the cost to the environment of manufacturing all that extra plastic, and disposing of it afterwards?

I use PicPick, which is a free program, and automatically stores the screen, or current window or other choice, when you press <print screen>.

Used it for years with no problems.

Hi - - Harold - - appreciate the clarification - - I looked at Magic Lantern for my 7D - - it appeared to have several nice options - - but couldn't tell if it really offered anything I couldn't do better in Post with other programs. Just wondering if CHDK {when available} would offer the OP any significant additional capability for his SX50 ?

I looked at it, but it seems very complex and I don't have a lot of 'capacity' spare for anything else like that right now. I am also a bit concerned about warranty issues - I haven't had the camera a week yet... I might well come back and look closer at it in a few months, when I have the hang of all the regular bells and whistles the camera comes with.

If you're bumping the controls a lot, then you're holding the camera wrong.
Cradle it in the palm of your left hand.
Curl the fingers of your right hand around the 'bulge' with the tip of your index finger gently resting on the shutter button.
There won't be any buttons anywhere near your fingers.

Google "DSLR camera holding technique". There will be plenty of images to peruse.

I *know* how to hold it. The problem is not the left hand. The buttons are not anywhere near my fingers, they are under my thumb and right palm. This is a small camera, with a lot of controls, and they have to put them *somewhere*. I am not the only person to have this difficulty. The average dslr is considerably larger then the sx50, and consequently has more room in which to place its controls.

There is a small 'groove' in the top of the back, which is obviously intended for the right-hand thumb. Trouble is that it is in very close proximity to several buttons *and* the 'control wheel', for want of a better term.

It looks to me like the spot focus was on the wing feather-- not on the eye and the neck feathers. Also could use some fill flash to open up the detail in that area. BUT perhaps you were just too far away?

I just got my sx50, and I can tell you that the bird was barely visible in the viewfinder at max zoom. You pretty much have to let the camera do its stuff out at that distance! Heck of a lens, though...

A high contrast limited gray toned image, all done with intent.

I like it. It seems very atmospheric, and the ducks add a sense of 'peace' to it

I am not as technical as some folks, but I do know what I like...

Printer: Canon MG2200 (3 -n 1)
I'm printing with black ink only . . .
I have left the color ink cart. in the printer; as I did with the printer I just replaced.
Question: Does the color cart. have to have ink in it to; if I'm only printing in black?
Thanks for all comments & help.
Jean

I have a Canon MX882, and the ink is a pain in the... I don't print photos on it, and apart from an occasional map from google, everything is B&W. It still goes through colour cartridges as fast as the black ink. I have talked with tech support on this, and they recommend leaving the printer switched on permanently, as apparently it does something each time it switches on which uses a small amount of ink. Also, it is set to print greyscale only.

It *still* goes through colour cartridges like they are going out of style...

I did discover if you print double-sided, it will use the small black cartridge rather than the big one, since the ink dries faster or something.

Nothing I have tried has made any difference, and the cost is not insignificant. I think I have gone through 3 sets of cartridges in less than 2 packs of paper, which is ridiculous.

If I could find one, I would go get a b&w only printer, but they don't seem to make them any more - at least, not at a reasonable price!

The bridge has a pedestrian walk way that allows you to see the dam from 900 feet over the Colorado River. It's the second highest bridge in the country. I'm afraid of heights, so I'll stick to the views from the airplane or the parking areas at dam level!
:-D :D

I know just what you mean. I would love to get photos from on that bridge, so long as I didn't have to go out on the bridge to get them!

I had the same sort of experience at the Grand Canyon - have you seen the glass half-bridge that sticks out over the edge??? Eek! I was scared stiff just watching other people go out on that thing!

Great shots Bloke, very cool to see the dam before the addition of the bridge!

Jeez... I hadn't noticed that! Mine were taken in late September/early October 2001. The road used to go right over the top of the dam. A couple of hours after flying over it, I drove across it on my way to the Grand Canyon. Unfortunately, this was just after 9/11, and the security was somewhat hightened. The visitors center was closed, and you couldn't get close to the dam on foot. I shot some video, but it wasn't good, I just couldn't get a good angle on it.

Last nite the moon was rimmed by clouds and the edges were illuminated. It was a great sight which I tried to capture with my
Canon SX50. I had no trouble getting the moon in focus and with lots of detail but could not get any cloud detail. I tried increasing and decreasing exposure. I was using Shutter priority and auto white balance
My setting were ISO 400, f6.5, 1/400
Your help and suggestions greatly appreciated
I posted one of my failed cloud/moon shots, the clouds were around the edge of the moon but not in the picture.

Nice picture, nonetheless. I just got my SX50, and that is one of the things I want to try with it. It was really cloudy last night here, though...

Ah, there!

I've never seen the angle you captured in #2. Gives a person a better perspective of the work done by the dam. Great shots

I agree, that is a neat angle. I flew over the dam years ago on a helicopter flight to the Grand Canyon from Vegas. These were taken from video, using a miniDV camera.

That conjures up a picture of some guy waiting patiently, with his camera pre-focused on a bird feeder, while a curious grizzly comes to investigate... Is there a smily for "Eek!"?

Here it is Djack41, it was done in Photoshop CC using the content aware move tool. With it I selected the area of branch that was immediately covering the ear, the tool done a pretty good job, I then tidied the ear up with the clone tool. Next I used content aware tool to fix a small section of the branch close to the ear and worked my way along the branch with the same tool, then just a small amount of tidying with the clone tool. Less than five minutes.
I hope you find this useful.
