Oh one more thing. Once you're in quick mask you can use your brush to add or subtract from the selection. black will subtract and white will add.

If when you select something, you get those marching ants which sometimes can be hard to see. However, if you press the Q on your keyboard it will put you into Quick Mask Mode and will be more clear to you what you've got selected.

Basically yes. Meter the scene to find your exposure then add your flash as fill.

Well you're actually very lucky they've given you plenty of time to practice. With high school grads, the senior portraits are more than just a formal portrait, they like them to be a reflection of who they are. The actual portrait in the gown and cap are pretty straight forward and you can look at lighting setups on a lot of websites. KelbyTraining.com has three excellent tutorials on senior portraits and you can join for a month, 12 months or whatever. Take a look at the introductory videos, they'll give you a good idea of what they cover.
Good Luck.

The ocean water is overexposed and that's what's washing it out. You may be able to recover it in post but you'll need photoshop or Lightroom because once you cut back on the exposure, you'll probably lose the faces and you'll have to correct them or otherwise prevent them from being darkened. I do agree with your husband, I'd get rid of the fish. In the future you can use fill flash when back lighting your subjects, that will allow you to reduce the overall exposure for the ambient light but keep the subjects lit.

Ok, Take a hint from David Zyser. When shooting a group shot of friends or family, ask them to do a group hug and then shoot them immediately while they're still animated. I've tried it and it works to break the stiffness.

You can use a macro lens and light it with two lights at 45 degree angles and polarize the lights to prevent glare. In my experience it's a lot faster with a scanner and you get better results.

I think this is an aberration due to the tree. If it's not happening consistently I'd say don't worry about it. If you use Lightroom, this is an easy fix with the gradient tool. Otherwise,it's really nice shot.

The easiest way is to lay it on a table and light it from both sides, (the lights being at 45 degree angle from the top. Then shoot straight down on it. As a caution get a pair of white cotton gloves and wear them whenever touching the paper so you don't leave any oil from your skin on it.

Actually, I think painting your tripod is a good idea. I'd probably go with a 60's psychedelic electric rainbow theme. Then I'll never lose my tripod again.

The one thing I would do is straighten it. Looks a bit tilted.
