I just did this cruise...well one almost exactly, but went from San Pedro, CA to Miami this past Oct 2016 (15 days)....be prepared for rain and humidity...I did take my tripod and the longest lens I own....I used the tripod to create my very first time lapse thru the locks....it wasn't a perfect time lapse but for my first attempt I was impressed with myself. I used my D750 with a 24-120 lens for just about every shot including my walk around lens, but did take out my longest lens 70-300 for a few shots off our balcony toward the shoreline...I did meet some folks aboard ship that had a 150-600 tammy which was fun to play with and if I owed one I would have taken it too. Not so much for carrying around on shore excursions, but to shoot off the boat while traveling into ports at things you won't have time while on your shore excursion or you won't be close to while actually being in port. We had a forward facing cabin so getting to the front of the ship for us wasn't necessary as we were 3 decks above the bow where the public viewed going through the canal...an absolutely perfect cabin location for going through the locks. We could look down at the forward bow and the crowd thins as you go through the locks....people get bored, but in the early morning, wow they were four or five deep at the rail of the bow of the ship. After the first set of locks the crowd dissipated. I have all my photos on Shutterfly if you're interested in seeing what we saw...I don't have the time lapse on line but again if you're interested just PM and I'll be happy to forward you that as well. It will be a fun trip for you...any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me...Lane

I'd contact "The Filter Connection" in New Hampshire...I bought an attachment/holder (forgive me I can't remember what it is called...I'll blame memory on old age, drugs and rock'n'roll) that I put on my lens...and then I slide a glass filter in front of the lens...you can buy many many flat glass filters from neutral density, graduated neutral density, colors, etc.....you get the idea and they all filters/glass fit into the same holder....when I change my lens from 67 to 72 or to 77, I just pop out the adapter ring (a $19.00 ring) for the appropriate size lens and the same holder works on all the lenses. The first time I called I spoke with the owner, John and I got a real education on filters, types and brands, what should be your first filter, etc. but all of the sales staff is very knowledgeable....That's all they sell are filters. This is a really good source for those that use filters.

Here is their website: http://www.2filter.com/

Good luck on whatever you purchase.

It looks like it is just a 4-port USB router, but in reverse....If I read this correctly...4 computers connect to this device and share one USB printer, keyboard, etc. Did you purchase the "optional" cables as shown on the page? I think you are trying to connect 4 printers and one or two computers....this device as I read it connects four computers to one device i.e. printer, etc.. You should be able to connect all four printers to a USB hub...this device doesn't look like a USB hub to me....have you tried to set up a pier to pier network...then all the computers can share all the printers. That's what is set up in my home/office...well not office anymore but two computers and one laptop share three printers, one laser, one all in one, and one photo quality printer. Each computer can access each others information...I'm not the most savvy computer guy, but what you purchase doesn't look like it will do what you want...sorry I couldn't be more helpful but somebody on this site is much smarter than me might be able to give you more info. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum....I've been using Shutterfly as my go to website....easy and pretty fast to upload and most importantly easy to share images with others plus the added bonus it's free and unlimited storage of "full size" jpg images...so it gives you sort of an on-line storage of your images for free....I don't sell my images, I just shoot for the fun of it. I live in a 55 and older community and shoot most of the events here...then links from my Shutterfly account to my photos are posted on our community website so the entire community can view...it works well for me....by the way, what city in So Calif.? I'm in the inland empire and you? Good luck with your choices.

Thanks for this info....I think most of the members, no matter where they live in the US, can capture some great images of this eclipse, even a partial as in my case. I've heard never to point your camera directly into the sun as it could damage your sensor....with that said do you or others think a 10 stop neutral density filter would be dark enough to shoot a timelapse of the eclipse without damaging the sensor in your camera, in particular, a Nikon D750? Thanks all in advance for your replies.

I use that same type of filter...I've purchase all my filters from a company in New Hampshire called the "Filter Connection". They carry all the major brands....I spoke with the owner several years back and got an education on filters in a twenty minute phone call that have been more helpful than all my years of photography. Here is a link to their site... http://www.2filter.com/
I think the owner's name is John, but all the of the sales force is very knowledgeable and helpful...when I change lens from a 72mm to a 77mm I was prepared to buy an entire new holder....the sale woman said oh know, just buy a new adapter ring for $20...she could have easily sold me a whole new holder but was honest enough to tell me what I needed. Great customer service.

I use/used a Trek Pod (around $200) for years with my D90 with the kit lens 18-105mm or 70-300mm with no issues unless it was really windy....I didn't trust the tripod part from blowing over with my camera attached...but used it many times as a monopod in the wind....easy to travel...collapsed it travels in a case about the size of a pool cue case....light weight...I own the Trek Pod Go and won't let go of it unless I sell my D90....they are hard to find and for some reason not very popular but I love mine...I don't use it much anymore since my upgrade to D750...I won't trust it for the weight of the D750 with 24-120 lens, but had no issues with the combo(s) mentioned above...here is a link with a video...check it out....

There is a company called "The Filter Connection" based out of NH...They carry nothing but filters.....the folks that answer the phone are very knowledgeable and honest...besides that they carry all the top brands. I spoke with the owner a few years back and got a lesson on filters in a 20 minute phone call then I've learned in my entire lifetime. The plus and minus of brands, types, etc...they are very helpful...I've purchased from them several times. I highly recommend a phone call to them or you can check out their website...http://www.2filter.com/
I also agree, buy the best you can afford....cheap is not the best way to go...you'll probably be unhappy with the results....Good luck with your purchase.

In addition to being an interesting shot and well taken....I just want to throw a wrench into your thoughts as to the owner of the bus might be....it might be an old Ray Charles bus...if you Google him you'll see he travel by bus sometimes. As a young man (1970's) I worked as an electrician at his home in Ladera Heights, CA and at his recording studio in the Los Angeles area. His record company was known as RPM records on Adams Blvd. Again if you Google RPM records you'll see images of the building in LA. Just thought I throw that out there for those of us into trivia...nonetheless good photo as all of your shots you've posted in the past and I've viewed. Thanks for sharing.

I've posted this link a couple of times over the last few weeks, but here it is again as I think it is worth it....someone on the is site graciously posted a link called "Shot Hot Spot" awhile back. (www.shothotspot.com). I wanted to see how it worked and tried it out by putting in my own neighborhood to see what came up. I was amazed...I've live in the area for over 10 years and never knew about some of the locations this site showed me. We're leaving for Hawaii the end of the month...although I've been to the islands several times I intend to use this site to find places I just didn't know about. Try it out and see what come up for yourself. It even works on my mobile phone...so you can be anywhere...enter the city/state and bingo...you've got places to see and visit. There is also a "advance" feature with the app to narrow down what you might want to shoot, i.e. sunsets, wildlife, architecture, etc. Most important have fun and a safe trip....be alert, lots of bad people out there no matter where you go.

Someone from this site posted this link a while back....try this link for the "Hot Spots": http://www.shothotspot.com/hotspots/?nelng=-82.7929&nelat=41.666&swlat=41.6281&swlng=-82.8452&country=US&types=&place=Put-in-Bay%2C+OH%2C+United+States&acc=&kw=&m=

You'll probably have to cut and paste this link into your browser. It works pretty darn good. Have fun........

Someone posted this link a while back on here and I thank them for doing so...This might help you find what interests YOU.... http://www.shothotspot.com/
After you open up the link, just put in the city and it brings up more ideas of places to photograph then you can imagine.
I've/we've been to the islands more than 10 times. Each time I/we go I find something else to shoot. Although I have some really pretty sunsets where I live....you can't beat a Hawaiian sunset. I try and make the sunset an evening event each day. Pull out the tripod & camera, poor a cold one and watch the sunset. I take a photo today and say it can't be prettier than this until the next day. I have so many sunset photos, I can compete with calendar sales at the souvenir shops.
We are off to Oahu for two weeks staying at the Marriot Ko Olina and then to Maui at the Westin Kaanapali for eight more days at the end of this month on into next month. But most important as mentioned here already...don't have your camera in your face all the time you'll miss some really interesting and beautiful sites.
I'm a little limited on the lens thing....as I only have 24-120mm and 70-300mm for my Nikon D750...but I schlep them both/all...but my walk around is 24-120. I found that if you use a BlackRapid strap or one similar, you can carry your gear much longer without getting too tired from the weight around your neck and shoulders. I walked around San Francisco with my camera and my shoulders and neck never bothered me from the weight of the camera and lens, my little feet got tired after walking six or seven miles. At 70 walking up and down the hilly streets of San Francisco can be a bit challenging too. Again as others have stated, take it slow you're on vacation.
If I'm driving, I'll leave my tripod and long lens in the trunk of the car otherwise they stays in the room. Never never leave anything in the car that can be seen. My son learned that the hard way, he went to pick up take out food he order from a restaurant...walked in, waited to pick up and pay and by the time he got back to his car they broke into his rental and took the bag that had his laptop, camera, etc. Even though you are in paradise, there are still thieves there that can ruin your vacation. Be alert!
Take good walking shoes and comfortable clothes and most importantly have fun.

Try putting you camera in bowl of raw white rice (uncooked)...they say it dries out cell phones and gets them working again....it might just work. Heck at this stage of the game all you can lose is a bowl of raw white rice, but maybe save the camera. It should stay I the rice for at least 48 hours is what I read somewhere. Good luck!

Lots of good input here but wanted to give you my two cents...contact "the filter connection"... http://www.2filter.com/... (sorry if the hyperlink doesn't work..so you may have to copy and paste) they're out of New Hampshire. All they sell are filters. I spoke with the owner a couple of years back and got a lesson on filters in that phone call that was amazing. I learned more about filters in a 20 minute phone call then I ever learn from anywhere. The company handles all the top brands at very competitive pricing. I think the owner's name is John but any of his employees are extremely knowledgeable too. I was about to spend money on a filter...nearly $100 or more when I got my new D750 (different mm lens) and the lady I spoke said all you need it this $20 adapter ring and you'll be good to go...saved me $80 bucks. Worth a phone call....
