What a sweet puppy face! And a magnificent adult face. Great photos. Glad I don't have your dog food bills :)

Good image. Looks like good resolution too with that crop. I thought you recently bought a Panasonic camera- but I see you are using an Olympus EM 10 Mark 2. Do you have both? I must have missed something :) I had the first EM 10 and I thought it was a fine camera- it was on the small size though. Did you find the eagles on the Yakima River?

What are you using the Oly 40-150 mm lens on? I already have the Fuji 50-230 mm lens- slow lens but super IQ and reasonably fast focus, lightweight.

Ksocha-
Renting is an excellent idea! However, as I think more about this, what I really want is a faster mid zoom, like a 70-200/300. The closest thing I can think of is the Olympus 40-150 mm f 2.8. It's not light weight but not ridiculously heavy and can be used with an extender. The Fuji mid zooms are on the slow end. Guess I will have to wait and see what comes down the pike :) Thanks for all your input- I appreciate your efforts.

Ksocha- thanks so much for posting these images. It appears similar to the output of the Panasonic/Leica lens although I'm sure you see a greater difference with the original image. Is the original a Jpeg or Raw?

If you are thinking of using a non Fuji lens with your xt-2 You will probably not get the image quality from it even if it is a superior lens. The reason is that the Fuji lenses are optimized for the sensor in the Fuji cameras which is different from the sensors in Sony, Nikon and Canon. Renting and doing a very stringent comparison would be a good idea.

Thanks for information. I am not thinking of using other than Fuji lenses.

There is a ring but, while Fuji's fixed aperture lenses all have a marked aperture ring, just like the rest of Fuji's variable aperture zooms this has no markings. Fuji's logic for the unmarked aperture ring is that the maximum aperture changes depending on what focal length you are zoomed to.

You change mode (manual or auto choice of aperture) with the Q/A button on the side of the lens, and, when in manual (aperture) mode, just turn the aperture ring to change aperture. The max aperture available at your choice will show in the viewfinder as you change focal length.

Okay, here is how our hand scale measures the weight of this lens.

The lens with front and back covers, lens hood, and tripod mount PLUS the 1.4 tele-extender came to 3.6 lbs. If I remove the caps, hood, tripod mount, and the tele-extender the lens alone weighed 2.8 lbs. To test the scale's accuracy, I weighed all the extras, but removed the lens itself. All the removable stuff came to precisely 0.8 lbs. So, it checks out exactly.

BTW, the tele-extender seems to work flawlessly. It's length and weight are minimal and, at least in today strong light, it focused very quickly. I'll post a few backyard snapshots later today.

That would be great to see some snaps.
That's a bit more than the Panasonic weighs but don't know it makes that much of a difference in use. I have a Pentax 300 mm f4 lens that weighs between the Panasonic and Fuji and it's still ok for me to handhold. I don't want to have a lens that I have to use only on a tripod. However I do love the Fuji camera ...

Good to know. Is there an aperture ring on the lens barrel? I looked at pictures and read the description but I couldn't tell.

I may be wrong, but I find I have better luck out of the heat of the day with song birds. Might be me rather than the birds though. Almost everything we saw were insectavoirs, seed eaters were, I suspect hiding from the heat.

Also, the high sun did not aid in the photo opportunity, shadows in the bushes really caused havoc. I captured a, my Merlin App claims it to be an Baltimore Oriole, deep in a green bush. The colors are....awful.

This was my first visit, to quote someone famous, "I shall return!"

The worst time for my camera is high contrast scenes with part shade and part sun/dappled areas with harsh highlights. I find that partly overcast skies produce the best images.
I must be in the wrong area at the wrong time of day (year)

I have rented both. I used the Leica constantly in the Galapagos. I think you saw the photos. I have the Fuji rental with me now. It seems every bit as good, but feels much heavier than the approximately one pound difference.

If I decide to buy only one, it would likely be the Leica because of the in-body + in-lens stabilization with the GX-8 as well as the weight factor.

That said, the IS on the Fuji is excellent. Focus speed seems about the same.

Interesting. I have the Panasonic- was wondering about adding the Fuji but doesn't sound like there would be that much difference overall. The Fuji lens is a little faster and the Fuji camera has a larger sensor - Good idea about renting. I never think about that. Where did you rent from?

I cannot talk about the Fuji only panasonic, I bought one when they first came out about a year ago & I can say one word "amazing" the stabilisation is incredible & the Leica glass produces tack sharp images every time.. you will not be disappointed.....I have seen a few reports where where there have been complaints about the focusing being a bit tight, mine is OK, I would advise to check before purchase if you can....

Thank you- I have the Panasonic. Was looking for a comparison to the Fuji.

All those birds in 30 minutes!! I have bird envy! That's quite a variety. Why was 3:30 a bad time of day- position of the sun or - it can't be lack of bird activity :) Very productive trip and nice composition.

Anyone have "hands on" experience with BOTH of these lenses and can say if there is one they prefer over the other? Thanks.
