Take extra batteries. Cold weather kills batteries very quickly. Also, carry your extra batteries close to your body for keeping them warm.

I prefer the more natural nature of #3. Good show on all of them. No ice (except in my drink) here in sunny FL

Well, I tweaked with my white balance and went to a car show in Dade City FL yesterday. Here's my favorites from the day.

I just screwed up my white balance custom setting. I recall reading somewhere that setting the WB while focused on green leaves like grass was the appropriate method for IR. Even here in Florida, this time of year the grass ain't necessarily greener. I have a full spectrum G6 conversion. Should I set the WB with no filter in place or should I set the WB with the filter on the camera? If it is with the filter on, should I set the WB every time I change the filter? (I have 3 filters; 720/850/950) Are there any other tips and tricks for experimenting with WB setting?

The K1000 is an great camera to learn the basics of photography. That is why it was used by many colleges throuout the UK. But do get an earlier model that was made in Japan. They were well built to last. The later ones were made in China and did not stand the sort of use that was expected of them as a teaching tool. The construction of the lenses on these later models was prticualry poor.
Have a look at this site which discribes the difference.

Anybody remember way back to when we used to knock the poor quality of the Japanese products?

Wow! A fine example of "the photograph is the score, the printing is the performance". Well, the quote is not exactly verbatim, but the sentiment is there. I see you went out before shooting an polished the grill and headlights ;-) Amazing how shiney they are compared to todays examples.

You have done a lot of tedious post work on this. I would not have the patience for what you did.

Great shot. Far better background than mine from on the street here in Tampa. Truck looks like it is in it's natural habitat. I especially like the pinpoint sun reflection off the grill. Did you add that effect or was it naturally there? It reminds me of the "sparkle" effect on the hero's smile that they use in the movies like Leslie (Tony Randall) in The Great Race.

All I did with this is to convert to greyscale. Wonder how it compares with what you all did. Uploading it to look at the various results in the same format.

Is this the way to add my 2 cents? Here's a couple of shots with my full spectrum G6 and a 850nm filter. They are untouched, I kinda like the blueish black look. I know there are straightening issues, just not focusing on that for now. I was disapointed that the clouds were not as dramatic as I anticipated. Do you think that's a DOF issue? Also, it was inconsiderate of the driver of the '49 Chevy pick up to not park in a better background.

JMCCL,

They look fine to me, interesting they came out blue, mine only do that when I channel swap.

I do think the clouds are a DOF issue, but the clock tower is nice and sharp. The truck seems just a touch washed out (cloudy?), maybe from the bright sky over on the left?

The important thing is that you are happy with the images and that you post more here soon.

With your permission I'd like to tweak the clock image and then convert to B&W but only with your OK.

Hi Eric.

Tweak away. I did a convert to greyscale in my PaintShopPro, the more I looked at it the better I liked it. I'll keep banging at this and have some fun. I think I'll try my 720nm and 950nm and make comparisons. Maybe the blue tinge has something to do with white balance. That's something I haven't messed with yet. Anyway, we do this for fun and the learning experience.

Yea, I'm liking the Bonsai shots.
