Give my thanks to your son for his service. May God bless him and his beautiful family.
Very nice, the lighting of the subject is great. On my monitor, the Flickr photo was much nicer, i.e. richer color, more definition, etc.
In freezing temps, one of the items that helps me is a good pair of hunting glomitts, an insulated mitten that allows you to pull back the mitten top to reveal gloved fingers with the fingeer tips exposed. Most decent pairs (Cabelas) have a pocket for a handwarmer. I am unable to reset the camaeras function with gloves and taking them off and on led me to drop a camera once.
Thank you for the info, the code worked with no problem.
Probably Martians picking up Twinkies at Walmart.
Did you salvage the lens? I had a similar experience. All worked after blow dryer, etc. The lens, however, wound up with microscopic dots of dried condensation which could not be removed on one of the inner elements.
Great shots and very apropos, Fall shots with a girl named Autumn. My favs were 2 & 6.
I was at Sterling Gorge today, it was freezing cold there. I was shooting a D300, 35mm f1.8 lens with a CP filter, 1/2 second @f/8, ISO 800. The HDR is 5 shots with a +/- 1 interval. Photomatix Pro and PSE 10.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

Good try. You must get either the top or the bottom of the falls in your picture (or both). This advice from my photography teacher.
Thank you for the advise.
I am new to landscape photography. I bought a Manfrotto 055XBPRO on Craigslist for $100 and a Manfrotto Ball Head 498RC2 at Adorama, forget what I paid. I have a Nikon D300 which I consider heavy and usually shot a wide angle zoom lens. I couldn't be happier with the performance of the Manfrotto setup except that it could be a little lighter.
Makes me want to hike the trail, great pics.
I pray that you have the best Christmas ever. Your son is a hero, God Bless Him.
