Thank you 14Kphotog, Jim, and Ob1, appreciate your responses. I am taking my 55-200 lens, but was wondering if a Nikon 14-24, or Tokina 11-16 would be worth renting.

I would be interested in similar feedback. I have a trip next month, carrying Nikon 18-55, 18-105, 70-200 and Tokina 11-16. Which would serve me best in Upper and/or Lower Anteleope?

So we are in the same boat. Obviously, I cannot DL a NEF file to view. I would expect the Jpeg to maybe not be as sharp, but the color washout/ exposure surprised me. Are we missing something here? a menu setting perhaps?

Very new to using RAW. just got a new D7100 and still practicing daily as I follow along with Burrell Young's "Mastering the Nikon D7100."
I'm shooting RAW on one SD card and jpeg backup on 2nd card. So why in the identical shot does the jpeg appear lighter and more exposed? The RAW has richer blacks and shadows when viewing the two files side by side.

Best advice I ever got was to choose by the feel in my hands. Don't discount that.

Like you, I got back into the hobby after several years, but with a limited budget. Grew up using Canon as a kid, but was torn between Canon and Nikon. Chose a Nikon D40 because it fit my hands better. Shooting pics was soon a pleasure and much more fun than point and shoot. I carried that camera everywhere. Recently upgraded to a D7100, but still like to grab the D40 for parties, walking around town, etc.

At the end of the day, at the beginner level, you won't know a nickel's worth of difference between the Canon or Nikon or other brands... or the quality of photo you produce with either camera. What you will know right away is how it feels in your hands, which in my mind becomes intuitive to how you compose and frame shots and make the photos an extension of your internal feelings.

My $.02.

Hi all,
I've been around photography for 40 years, from hanging out in my Dad's darkroom during high school to later working in TV. I got away for a while (20 years), but dipped my toe in the water with a D-40 about 7 years ago. Really enjoy landscapes, so just bought a D7100, a Tokina 11-16mm, a tripod and a few ND filters. Can't wait to get out before dawn and stay beyond sunset. I feel comfortable with light and composition but can tell technology has moved way beyond me. I look forward to browsing your great site!

I used to shoot high school and local sports for TV, which I know, is a little different than stills... but we always wore whte sneakers and white athletic socks to the gym. To get a proper WB, we would literally shoot our foot!

Looks like you are covering a ot of ground. Be sure to post your findings when you return. Your trip will help me prepare.
I'm going there in June for 7 days: Sedona, GC North Rim, then on to Page, AZ for Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend and a side trip to Monument Valley. I hope to get all that in and I'm only going to No. AZ. But I'm on vacation and don't like to push a schedule on my off time!
