Thanks just wanted to get a low profile shot of the eagles flying down the creek

A crazy thought, I wonder if using a monopod would be better, collapsed down so you're holding the camera at eye level. Never tried it, of course. Then you'd still be controlling the lens with your hands, just not carrying quite as much weight.

I see you're in Sonoma County, Calif. That's where they grow all the pot, isn't it?

That would be Humboldt County, at least until the first of the year. Now people are rabidly converting greenhouses (who needs flowers, anyway?) everywhere in CA.

I am going to be in the park for 2 days in early February, since I have never been there I am looking for suggestions on what is a must see. I hear that night photography is a must there so i am hoping to do a time lapse and a few star trails. Looking forward to reading your suggestions. I would also love to see what you all have photographed while there.

Thanks,

Rena

Wow!! Excellent place. You can spend a couple of weeks and not see all the main points.
The Park Service hands out a newsprint brochure with all the highlights, according to them. You can use that as a starting point.
My favorite walk is the mile-long trail inside Hidden Valley, which at one time was a gigantic cattle pen for rustlers. No kidding, it's amazing. Very popular with rock climbers now.

If (and considering it may rain, only if) you have a four-wheel drive, there is a quite good dirt road in the very northwest corner of the park, Covington Flat, Lower and Upper, that you can follow all the way up to a little peak. In between, there are amazing stands of mature Joshua trees and junipers, probably the best stands in the park, at least that I've seen. Just gorgeous, must be seen to be believed. This road is accessible from the town of Joshua Tree, a bit east of Twentynine Palms, and the only real issue is that there is fairly deep sand on some of it -- no other hazards, big ruts, or rocks to worry about.

For night photography, get off the main roads. The campground at White Tank is very nice, especially if you walk off a couple of hundred yards into the rock formations, which are fantastic. Lost Horse campground is also good. But the best, which is an official Dark Sky site, is to get into Pinto Basin from either the north or south entrance, then I would further recommend following the dirt road Old Dale Road, which is also 4WD, but probably passable in a regular car for a few miles. I photographed the supermoon in Pinto Basin, attached.

There are also a bunch of dirt roads, easily passable in a regular vehicle, around the Desert Queen mine area, between that and Barker Dam. I have another photo of the moon the next night from that area that I am attaching.

Man, I've got the itch to go back now. Maybe I'll see you there.

Wes

I use the Cotton carrier, the only issue is perspiration on a hot day.

Currently I don't use LightRoom.

Wouldn't it be reversible only until you save the file. Once it's saved, can you still reverse the cropping!

Everything in Lightroom is reversible. The original file is never modified. The edits you made are saved as a sequential set of instructions in the catalog, and applied every time you open the image (or any virtual copy).

It's not hard to fix.

This is after about 3 mins with a brush in color blend mode to get the correct color in the flare, and with a 50% gray layer in overlay mode and a black brush to do some non-destructive burning in.

Stuff happens, and you just need to learn how to deal with it. BTW, this is a blog post I did in 2012 on exactly this kind of flare.

Very cool, thanks for that explanation. I got some bad lens flare photographing the supermoon rising, framed by Joshua Trees.

OK, I'm confused. Seems like some people, and the manufacturer, say to point it at the light source, others say to use it to meter incident light from the subject? Which is correct?
On a related note, would it work to meter a scene lit only by light from the full moon?
Thanks,

I would love to have a 2.8 or faster wide angle lens for my 6D. I have the 24-105, and the 16-35 II or III are both awesome, but out of my price range. Does anyone have any suggestions, other than the Rokinons? My 'Hopeful' price is around $800.00.

I have the 16-35 II, and I love it. I am starting to comprehend its power in composition. My Milky Way shots with it turned out very well.
I also bought the Sigma f1.4 20mm Art lens. I haven't used it as much, but will try some more MW shots in the spring; I bought it because I thought the wider aperture would allow me to do night sky shots at lower ISO.

But I keep coming back to the 16-35. I use it all the time for landscapes, night photography. I tried a rental 24mm f2.8 also for night photography, but I didn't think it as sharp as the 16-35.

Has anyone used non-canon batteries in a t5i or t6i ? There is a significant price difference, but I'm reluctant to buy an inferior or worst, a battery that might damage the camera.

Not in those specific models. I use Watson (from B&H) in my 6D and 5D3, like them better, they seem to hold a charge longer. The only battery failure I had was a Canon battery.

I will make this as short as possible. On December 23 at about 4:30 P.M. CST, I had the urge to order about $4000 in camera stuff from 42nd Street Photo. I did this through Ralph by telephone. About forty minutes later, after having a changed of mind, I called and left a message that I wanted to cancel. Apparently 42nd Street had closed.

I normally order from Adorama or B & H, but both were closed for religious observances on Friday, December 23. Time was a factor, because of a European trip scheduled for early January, so I resorted to 42nd Street.

On Saturday, December 24, I called 42nd Street in the morning and told Walter that I had left a message the day before that I wanted to cancel. He told me the order had already gone out, so I just needed to receive the shipment and then call back for instructions on how to cancel, and there would be no problem. I told Walter I would do that.

This shipment arrived today at about noon, Mississippi time. I promptly called 42nd Street and spoke to Walter about returning the merchandise. He told me that there would be a 20% restocking charge. Based on the order, that would be about $800. I told told him that I had barely touched the merchandise, but he insisted that the charge would apply.

I told Walter I was unaware of the 20% restocking charge. He specifically told me that, "We never tell our customers about the restocking charge." I asked Walter why customers were never told this. Walter said, "Because it is on or website." I told sweet Walter that I ordered by telephone, not by website. Walter said that there was nothing he could do about this.

To his credit, however, Walter put me on hold and came back to tell me that he had authority to reduce the re-stocking fee to 15% (or about $600).

Ok, I am familiar with the narrow profit margins for sellers of cameras. If I keep the merchandise, there is a modest profit for the seller. If I return the merchandise, there is a 15% payment for "restocking" but the seller still has possession of the merchandise. Basically, 42nd would receive a $600 payment for receiving a package, the contents of which have not been disturbed. Nice profit for no sale.

I have chosen to keep the merchandise. Fortunately, I can afford to pay. But that is not the point.

As a lawyer, I know that a deal is a deal, and I ordered the merchandise. The seller has no obligation to take it back. That is all well and good. But my problem is with Walter's saying that his company never tells the customer about the 20 percent restocking fee. They really don't have too, but I can assure those reading this that I will never--I mean never--order again form 42nd Street. You guys can do what you want. Just beware.

We live and learn. I will stick with B&H and Adorama in the future. The "boys" at 42nd Street can do whatever the heck they want. I will rejoice knowing that I never have to deal with Walter, Ralph or any of those 42nd Street guys again for the rest of my life. I hope they have a conscience, but I really don't know, especially after Walter saw fit to interrogate me about why I wanted to cancel my order. I don't cuss, but if I did, I would know exactly what to say to this guy.
I will make this as short as possible. On December... (show quote)

I tried calling them once. They tried to upsell me, wouldn't approve the order. I told them to f*** off.

Now, I only buy from B&H, since the local, excellent store Keeble & Schuchat in Palo Alto closed down. Their customer service has been exemplary. No problems, ever, in fact, I forgot one one order to include the bonus items, they shipped them out to me, no charge.

William, you kept the merchandise. So, the issue is sort of moot. However, had you returned the merchandise it isn't going to jump out of the box and restock itself. Someone has to receive it, unwrap it, check to make sure it hasn't been damaged by either you or the shipper, then restock, enter information into a computer, etc. In short, there is a good bit of work required of the employees in handling returned merchandise.

Additionally, 42st has a well exposed reputation here on UHH. There have been a number of examples cited by UHH members. Just do a search for 42nd St. Photo and read the glowing reports that have been written.

I certainly don't disagree, but 20% of $4k is an $800 restocking fee. Nice work if you can get it:)

I am headed to London in May. I am taking my Canon but have been looking at lenses for a while and wondering if I should upgrade before I go. What lenses would you take on a trip like this? London and surrounding area so I need a wide angle and something with a zoom also. Suggestions? I probably can't afford Canon lenses (or only one). I have the 18-135 that came in my kit. Thank you in advance!!

We were just in London and Scotland in September. I took my Canon with my 24-105 f4L, which I used almost all of the time, and my 16-36 f2.8L II, which I used for landscapes in the Scottish Highlands, that is when the clouds lifted enough to see some land. Got some nice shots of the River Spey with the 24-105, we actually had two sunny days :P The shore shot is from Broadford, Isle of Skye, when the rains finally lifted for a few hours:)

There's a link in the help page to get it. Unfortunately, it looks like they took those help pages offline. However, here are the contents of the file. Just save this as a separate text file
