I always hold my lenses with my hand as far out on the lens as possible, tends to steady the lens better. That is why Nikon put the zoom ring out on the end. Try it, you'll like it.

Thanks Bill. I will give it a try.

Edit: “... using the tripod foot is not that comfortable and doesn't work when you switch to vertical.”
This makes no sense. The tripod ring can be rotated.

If you're shooting an event and switching back and forth between vertical and horizontal it takes too much time to loosen the ring, rotate and re-tighten it. Leaving it loose is not an option. I'm going to try adjusting my hold. I suspect I'll get used to it quicker than I originally thought. Thanks for your input.

I have had this lens since it was first released and I completely understand what you are saying. Over time, I have become comfortable holding it and I suspect you will as well. At first I was not too happy with Nikon for swapping the focus and zoom ring, but once again, with time, it has become my new normal. It's just such a good lens and I do find having the zoom ring up front very useful. It is now rare for me that I accidentally 'bump' the focus ring. I like your glove idea, but not for the present weather here. It's a superior lens. Best of luck.

Thanks cjc2. I'll keep experimenting with it. Its definitely not going back! Its just too good a lens. I will make it work for me :)

Thanks,

I thought about a pistol grip, but its almost impossible to adjust zoom while using it.

I recently purchased the Nikon 70-200 2.8 FL ED and right from the first shot I am totally impressed. This lens is everything reviewers say it is, simply awesome. Its one flaw is the location of the focus ring being right where most of us hold the lens, which can lead to unintentionally moving it, resulting in out of focus shots. The zoom ring is further out on the barrel. Workarounds I have heard of include 1) adjust hold to further out on barrel, 2) put gaffer tape on focus ring so it doesn't move, 3) use tripod foot to rest in palm. For me, 1) adjusting hold feels cumbersome, 2) I'd like to avoid gaffer taping in case I need to adjust focus manually, and 3) using the tripod foot is not that comfortable and doesn't work when you switch to vertical.

I've only had the lens a few days and the best I have come up with so far is to use the tripod foot along with a bike glove that is fingerless and has padding in the palm which makes it more comfortable to hold. When switching to vertical I adjust my hold further out the barrel. I was wondering if any hoggers have this lens and how they work around this shortcoming.

btw, I'm a hobbyist and shoot with a D7200. This lens is a big step up for me. A friend let me borrow his and I was hooked on it :)

Thanks,

Alan

I hear ya. Challenges never seem to be timed well for me. I decided to show a few oldies I like.

Take it back to Costco and exchange it. They have one of the best customer satisfaction policies of any retailer out there.

Thanks. I will be going the return/exchange route.

After reading some good reviews I purchased a box of 50 sheets of 11x14 Kirkland glossy photo paper in late Feb. The first 2 prints were fine, no issues. I didn't need that size again until a few days ago and I found almost every sheet to be badly warped. If I lay one flat and press the middle down, the corners come up 1/4" or more and stay that way. Even when I let the paper acclimate for a while it still does it. The paper was stored in the original box in dry conditions at 60-65 deg. I've never seen paper do this before. The prints are unusable. They don't lay anywhere near flat when matted. Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions? I don't think I've done anything wrong, all my other papers stored alongside are fine. I haven't contacted Costco yet. Other than this issue the paper seems to be as good as other more costly brands.

Hi, re D7200: 2 weeks ago I

- moved my existing 64gb card from Slot 1 to Slot 2;
- inserted a new 256gb card into Slot 1; and
- Assigned Role Played by slots as Slot 1 = RAW; Slot 2 = JPEG.

I shot a few pics up to yesterday; removed the 64gb card from Slot 2 & transferred the files to PC using View NX-I as usual. All files were JPEGs as expected; everything worked as it always does. I had not until today removed the 256gb card from Slot 1.

I shot a few pics today, removed the 64gb card from Slot 2 & transferred the files to the PC as above. I've done it 241 times before (across 2 cameras).

Today, some of the files transferred from the 64gb card from Slot 2 are JPEGs & the rest are NEF files.

To be clear, I am looking at NEF files on my PC WITH the 64gb card from Slot 2 still in the PC. The card in Slot 1 was not removed at this stage - it's still in the camera & has been since I put it there 2 weeks ago.

The camera is not connected to the PC during download - the card goes into a USB-to-SD card adapter & the adapter with the card in it goes into the PC.

Pic #1 shows the Slot assignment setting - exactly as set & as it should be (for me).

Pic #2 shows the 64gb card in Slot 2 & the bigger card in Slot 1.

Pic #3 shows the downloaded files - disregard the 1st 4 JPEGs - they were already in this folder. The 5th JPEG, and all the NEF files, transferred from the 64gb card from Slot 2, despite the Slot Role assignment.

I am SUPER careful with card removal, transfers & storage - I won't let anyone else do it & I have a system. I know for sure I never removed the bigger card before today's transfer as I have no real need to transfer NEF files as this stage - I'm just collecting them for now.

I shoot with a D7200 having same settings as yourself. Only time I have seen this is when I failed to have a card in slot 1. There was no warning message, but the top lcd screen showed a card in slot 2 only. If the 256gb card was physically in slot 1 when you took those shots then I would guess that you have an intermittent issue with the micro adapter card making proper contacts. Another thought...have you checked what is on the 256 card? Did you format it when you put it in camera?

Just wanted to say hello to you guys …. let you know that tho I have been here for a while and I have posted some work and commented on others, I have basically given up on getting my camera in my hands.
I enjoy coming here and looking at the wonderful examples of creativity, but I just don't feel ANY confidence in my own work any more.
So I guess I am saying... keep posting folks... I enjoy looking.

I'm kind of a newbie here, but looking at your posts, I think your work is excellent. Could be your feeling is a result of your friend leaving town. Rainy season starting doesn't help either. Trying photographic techniques that you haven't tried before may spark the creative soul once again. Maybe macro, panoramas, IR, etc.. Joining a local club is a good idea also. I recently joined one and it reinvigorated my photographic desires. Hope this helps. Wish you good luck.
