If you do decide to opt for a compact system camera, the Nikon 1 range is as small as they come (in particular the J1/J2). The V1 is dearer and larger but has a viewfinder.

Your choice will depend on how pocketable the camera needs to be. Even with one of the smaller lenses, a 4/3 camera will still be a bit of a lump to carry about. Having said that, you may be used to bulky cameras, since the G9 isn't exactly diminutive. But if you want a longer focal length, the lens will guarantee that it will not be pocketable (unless your pockets are the size of saddlebags!).

Another possibility is to check out a newer version of the type of camera that you are used to. For example, the Nikon P7700 has the same size of sensor as the G9, but it is a latest-generation CMOS sensor, and despite the fact that it is a fairly bright lens (f2-f4), it still gives 7.1x optical zoom. I've only seen pictures of it, so it's hard to gauge size, but Nikon describe it as "surprisingly" compact.

The usual advice that I see in UHH is to have some in-shop hands-on experience with the cameras that you are considering. Then you will know if you like the feel, size, features etc.

Silhouettes AND reflections in the same shot. Doubly nice!

You're welcome. I see that you cropped it to leave the bright part of the sky in the centre. It occurred to me later that I should have suggested that, but you did it anyway, so well done. And well done for noticing the snap-worthy sky.

I love silhouettes too. Whether you're on auto or manual, use the brightest part of the sky to set exposure. The silhouetted stuff should sort itself out if you do. I would have tried either partly or totally obscuring the sun with the trunk of the tree.

You take your camera mountain-biking? I'm impressed!

My amateurish suggestion would be to crop it along the bottom to just above the line of cars. That would leave the trees etc in silhouette. I would also lose the pole on the left as it is a distraction. That would leave the sky, which is what the shot is all about - and it looks excellent.

The moving subject is in reasonably good focus, and there's enough in the scene to convey the pleasantness of using a riverside (or canal-side)walkway.

The subject is pin-sharp and well-separated (would that be the FZ200 in macro mode by any chance?).

What if someone started a thread entitled "Jokes - share your current favorite here".

I'd do it myself, but I still feel like a bit of a newcomer (I don't want to appear presumptuous).

I love the humour and jokes in the forum. I suspect that there's some good stuff to be shared. Good idea about the separate section for politics.

If it was placed/fell into the passenger footwell, it may have slid under the passenger seat. It's a long shot, but you never know - it's happened to me with shopping. Best of luck anyway.

My friends laughed when I said I was getting a stainless steel wallet. I might be the one having the last laugh.

The only one who's in a real position to judge is the guy's wife - and I think it's obvious what her verdict is.

Mind you, that's probably the one I'll be using most.
