Could you re-post the photo & check off the "Download" box. I would like to have a closer look at the bee. There might be an interesting story to go with this photo.

I have had no apparent issues with stability although I suspect this will become more of an issue as I go for larger and larger magnifications.
The sensor dirt trails in the last image indicate that you do. (wiggly lines, not straight)

I have also posted a few stacked pictures
I like the lighting on "Stack of 51". Yellow is difficult for me.

The last thing I want is all the answers, that would take all the fun away. I just want to be pointed in the right direction.

As for rig version 2: I was thinking of mounting the specimen holder/lift on a linear rails to make it adjustable and fixing them to some sort of vibration dampening plate (although the ones I'™ve seen are very expensive).
Good idea.

Returned to the location where I previously found a larva of the Green Thistle Tortoise beetle (Cassida rubiginosa). Found a lot of larvae, and eventually found an adult.
Outstanding series!
I took some shots of the larva awhile back but haven't tried to ID yet. I will be going back to the Thistles today to see if I have any adult beetles. Seems they were introduced in the USA for thistle control.
Thanks for posting & ID. A well done series.

After a very intense and rewarding discussion in this forum during the last two days, I decided to step out of the box and try one of the many methods discussed on links submitted by others. These two images were captured this morning using the "full contact" method (hand over the lens, cheek firmly against viewfinder, roll trigger finger), 200-500 zoom, Gitzo tripod with Wemberly gimbal, and most importantly VR ON. I feel comfortable with the results, which I believe only limited by the 12 mp resolution of the camera. I invite your comments and critique. Thank you.

They look very, vert good. But, I have several questions. (1) Focal length of lens, (2) Subject distance. (3) Was gimbal locked down Or loose for quick movement. (4) Camera settings. Thanks for an interesting test.

While looking for insects to shoot today, I spotted this tiny spider hiding between the petals of a daisy. I took a couple of shots but the little bugger started running around on other petals. I think my diffusers spooked it so I left the camera where it was at (it was on a tripod) & after about a minute, it came back to the exact same spot. I took 6 shots using the focus ring to acquire the slices. Stacked in Zerene stacker & tweeked in PSE 9. I used a Nikon D7000 + Tamron 1.4x TC + Tamron 180mm macro lens, with the Nikon R1C1 twin flash units with homemade diffusers, all mounted on a Giottos tripod. Camera settings: ISO 200, 1/200-sec at f/16. Check out the download & let me know what you think. Thanks for looking.

Looks like a Hummingbird Clearwing moth. These are extremely hard to get a good shot. All three are pretty good but the first photo is very good. I would be very happy to have taken this shot & I have taken hundred's of shots of these very fast moving moths.

Sorry, should have said, Sigma 180mm f3.5 macro with Sigma APO EX DG 1.4X TC. On my crop sensor Sony A77ii it gives me the equivalent of 378mm or 2.1:1 magnification at minimum focus distance.
No disrespect intended BUT your statement of "equivalent" focal length & magnification will be misleading to someone new to macro photography. In theory, adding the 1.4X TC will give you an (actual) magnification of 1.4:1 & the focal length is anyone's guess since the focal length shortens on most (if not all) true macro lenses. Crop factor doesn't alter the results.

On my Tamron SP AF 180 Macro lens, I tested it with a Tamron SP AF 1.4X TC and these are the results with my combination:
180 lens set @ 1:1 MWD=244 mm (9 5/8") FOV= 23.6 mm = 1:1 (1X)
180 + 1.4X TC ( lens set @ 1:1) MWD=244 mm (9 5/8") FOV= 16.1 mm = 1.47:1 (1.47X)
180 + 1.4X TC (lens set @~ 1:1.4) MWD=314 mm (12 1/8") FOV= 23.6 mm = 1:1 (1X)
Note: MWD was measured from the front lip of the lens to a flat target ( machinist's ruler with 0.5 mm graduations)

Again, no disrespect intended. Just my results.

This guy was a big ham. I first found him perched on the antenna of my truck. He would take off & come back after a quick trip around the yard. I took a few shots but they looked really goofy with him sitting on the antenna ball so I decided to try taping a stick on the antenna. I waited for him to take off & as I was holding the stick up to the antenna, he came back & perched on the stick before I could get it taped on! He stayed there while I taped the stick on. He didn't seem to mind the flash so I was able to get close enough for the 1:1 shots. Check out the downloads. Thanks for looking.
