You have every reason to be a proud mom. Your son is off to a great start. The math and physics he'll learn in aviation will also serve him in understanding the dynamics of driving a car. Something most driver training courses do not teach is the physics of a vehicle and how to control it!

Recently a post was made about a company claiming to output a 1200 DPI with a 600 DPI printer. Obviously the claim is false. What is true thought is that many times we do not pay enough attention to printing. The company offers a software solution that I found lacking after looking at the samples they offered on line to demonstrate how good it is supposed to be.

Well, this thread is a reaction to that post and the company claims as no one really needs a someone else to put lipstick on a pig. We can all do that quite well if we do not pay attention to what we are doing.

Everything in our computer is calibrated, WYSIWYG and so forth. We select the crop ratio, the printer/paper combination ICC and here we go...

Well, not so fast.

First off you need to consider if you left space for matting/framing. If you did not, welcome to cut toes, short hair style and of course some kid left or right cheek amputation (when it not the weird guy from accounting that lost an arm...). Please revise your crop...

Now you are ready, right?

Nope.

First off the ratio is just that, a ratio. It does not mean the image is printable at all. If you print a 8*10 at 300 DPI the image needs to be al least 2400px*3000px if you are under or over you need to adjust the size using your favorite software.

Up-sizing is more difficult than downsizing simply because the software has to make up pixels that do not exist in the first place. There are several solution to this from specialized software or add on to using what already have.

Once you have done the down/up sizing you then have to check for tonal change then for sharpness and edit as needed.

Well, basically all this should have done all of this a loooong time ago!!!

We really need to PP for the final printed product from the start to avoid all types of problems that will creep up if you do not.

Do not forget that an image is rarely seen close up so the DPI can become somewhat irrelevant in some instance. The further away the less important it appears to be but then again the print may also have to be larger. Selecting the correct crop and image size from the start will make your image look much sharper and more attractive if you pay attention.

In short, while we all learn PP and try new things all the time we often lose track of the final product, whatever it is. Don't.

The main reason that I wish to leave my 2 existing lens at home is the extra weight on the plane and carrying them around on long hikes etc. Therefore the nikon 200-500 or the tamron 150-600 doesn't solve this problem.

It does for wildlife photography in Canada or Alaska. Take a 24mm W.A. for scenics, and the long lens for wildlife. You did ask for advice, yes?

I shoot with a Nikon D610 in both RAW and JPEG. I'm travelling later this year to northern Canada and Greenland and need help on deciding which lens to purchase. I already have the nikon AFS 24-70 ED 2.8 and nikon AFS 70-200 2.8 G2ED. With the wildlife that I hope to encounter I think the 70-200mm even with a TC14E 1.4 converter will not give me a enough reach.
I'm considering purchasing either the nikon AFS 28-300mm or the nikon prime 300mmF4. I would then leave the 2 heavy lens at home.
Can anyone assist with some views on which would be the better lens to take on my trip. The primary purpose is to shoot wildlife.
Thanks in advance
Russ

Consider the Nikon 200-500 f5.6. It would be ideal for your trip, have better range than either you mentioned, and would be more useful than either lens you mentioned.

A friend who owns a Nikon D7100, and owns only two lenses, a Nikon 18-55mm kit lens, and a FX 28-300mm, wants to save his sister money, from not paying a pro photographer to do a small Wedding. He is an amateur just like me. I asked him, why didn't the Bride and Groom's family chip in to hire a pro photographer. He said they were already paying for other preparations to the Wedding. I told him those 2 lenses he owned were not going to cut the mustard. He does have an external flash unit. I offered to loan him my prime lenses of 35mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.8. And an outdoor plug in work light he could use inside the small Church. He has never done a wedding before. He said he will have two young laborers to help out. He says he can handle it. I told him to prepare for a long day when he does it. Reception included. I'm glad I'm not doing it.

You may be setting higher expectations than the family is. Not everyone spends thousands on a Photographer. Yet these are the only stories published in photo magazines. His biggest problem is lack of back up equipment in case something fails. A real pro always has redundant back ups and fall back plans.

Got a source link?

Why do you hear people say they like Nikon color vs Canon, or Canon vs Nikon. With a ColorChecker from X-Rite you can adjust all brands to produce similar results.

My problem is placing a bid on a similar or identical item that I already purchased and received a while ago but forgot about; usually a minor accessory item, such as a lens cap, step-up ring, release cable, etc. Perhaps I should keep a detailed inventory checklist on what I have and what I still need to buy, in order to prevent double purchases in the future. And keep the list in front of me when I'm looking on eBay.

I've had and still suffer at times from kidney stones. Had surgery in the early '70s while in the army in Vietnam and have had an attack as recently as last fathers day. Painful little bastards, and luckily I've been passing them. I've been told drinking one or two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice every morning helps by making the stones rounded. Unfortunately my body seems to be a factory for these.

Perhaps you should put a bullseye target in the Lav to have something to shoot the round stones at?

I ordered a GPS for my D810 from Camata. $49 and some change. Reviews say it is unreliable, but I found pulling the mini USB cable out from the unit and plugging back in works better than the little switch at times, when it needs to be reset.

We were taking this very innocent ferry ride from Dauphin Island, AL, to the Florida coast. The ferry boat captain announced, "Folks, please don't be alarmed by anything you are about to see around you. We have agreed with the Coast Guard to cooperate in a training operation during this short ride. Our boat will be the imaginary target of terrorists/invaders/whatevers; the unmarked boat will pretend to try to board us, and the US Coast Guard will try to prevent them from doing so. You are in absolutely no danger: this is merely a drill.
So while a few people looked somewhat green, I, of course, bolted to my Canon 70-200 L IS lens and D7 camera and stood on the very roughly bouncing deck of our boat--trying to protect my outfit from the spray and adjusting to the rather vigorous bouncing with fast shutter speeds.
Needless to say, most of my shots were a combination of very blurred motion and salt water spray; but this one came through the juggernaut. I liked the action, the menace of the 50mm gun, and the determination on the guy's face. Hope you like it. It was an awesome experience coming out of nowhere.

We had the privilege of being guests on a Coast Guard Cutter at the start of the Port Huron to Mackinaw race one year. There were sailing craft from many nations, including several Amarica's Cup Boats. The Coast Guard buzzed by us in a Zodiac powered by 2 200hp Mercury outboards, upstaged by the US Border Patrol's Zodiac with 4 200hp Mercurys. It was quite a sight! And yes, they were well armed.

Thanks everyone for your responses. The outdoor antenna looks like the ticket but I'm wondering whether the attic version would be a reasonable alternative since the outdoor setup is a bit more labor.

it might work better if you are in an area of ice and snow, especially if you'll have help in aiming and adjusting it. Even in the attic, I'd run a wire to "ground" for lightning protection.

And your cable service doesn't run commercials too?? We goy rid of Dish Network because we had to upgrade 5 levels to get one show I wanted. Now we watch the prior season for free. Besides. they were "giving" us programming in 10 languages we don't speak. There is so much on YouTube alone that you could educate yourself on almost any subject. And on iTunes you can find free university classes to watch and learn from, but no "credit" towards a degree.

I saw a news report just last night about "kit guns" that a person purchases on-line then has to assemble it themselves. It appears these "kit guns" do not require a background check of the buyer so any felon can legally buy them.

A convicted felon can't own firearms by law, but you point out how they can be gotten by anyone. And yet our Congress sees no need for any new gun controls. And they act "in the public interest"?
