Picasa & Gimp

Picasa is the easier of the two but doesn't do as much

Gimp has a steep learning curve but there is a VERY easy tutorial on this forum here's a link http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-69708-1.html

Hi tramsey, Ive just downloaded Picasa, and at the moment, I think this is all I will need to level my horizons. But I will look at others that are availible. Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated  :-D pip

Not sure what platform you are using, but Snapseed is pretty cool. Very simple to use for the average Joe or Jane, as the case maybe. I stumbled on this app while using my wife's iPad. I think it comes free with the iPad and iPhone.

GIMP

Picasa

Picasa is the easiest and will do what you want for now.
Photoscape and GIMP are for more extensive edits, but still free and very good.

Hi Wahawk, will probably go for the easiest first, just to work my way round. Thanks for your suggestions, its appreciated :D  pip

Welcome PIP, The learning curve for photoshop and gimp is pretty steep. Having said that, elements and a good book will teach you 'what you want to do - when you want to do it'. Photoshop tutorials abound on the net and can be printed off. If you're new to using a camera you will want to do quite a bit of editing till you get the hang of things cause ther's lots of buttons and things to try and even more things that go 'wrong' between lense and printer..

Thanks G Brown, for your suggestions and advice, I have not heard of elements. I will google it and have a read. Your time and comments are appreciated, :D  pip

As others have already said PIPDYOUNGER Picasa & GIMP are free.
Other than that all I will add (for all on UHH) it's amazing what you can find on Youtube if you search under download.

But please be careful what you do.

Baz

Hi Baz, I never thought of that, youtube.
I like the sound of Picasa, and I will take your advice on downloads. Thanks for your time and advice Baz, its appreciated  :D pip

I use Photscape. It is a free download that has many functions and small learning curve for first time users.

Welcome PIP.
PIP, do you shoot a Canon? If so it came with DPP, Canon Digital Photo Professional. It is excellent software, especially for the things you mention. It's free and it works.
If you shoot another brand, they came with something similar, but I don't know anything about them.
People immediately discount the bundled software as something to ignore. I used it for two years and only went to Lightroom(LR) when I started taking classes and it was required. I still use DPP for lmost all work that is not going to galleries, contest or I am trying to sell. Check it out.

Edit: it's probably already on your computer if you loaded all the discs that came with your camera. Look on your desktop.
I still use only the Canon software to download all my raw files.

Thanks SS, I shoot a fuji, the software that came with the camera has some functions but the one I want which is leveling the horizon. Well I cant find it if it does. I have taken on board your comments and will look into it further. Thanks again for your time, its well appreciated  :D pip

Here's one with some Lightroom adjustments to show what can be done. The exposure suggestions above would move you in this direction sans the vignette.

There might be some interesting crop opportunities as well. Since only the thumbnail is posted significat cropping would drop the resolutiion too much to fairly illustrate.

Let us know if you like it better or not.

Hi MtnMan, yes that is a vast improvement. I also got some help from Erv who did some post work. I was making my way to take pics of the monument at the top of the hill #3 and the sunlight through the wooded area was lovely, so I took photo's on my way up. I will go back again at some point and try your suggestions taking several shots with different settings. One of our members has suggested that the pics are cluttered, and looking at them, I would tend to agree. I cant do post work on pics as I have no software to do so. :( Thanks greatfully for your help, and I will post photo's again if they turn out ok cheers  pip

Honest opinion is that the composition in # 3 is pretty good but all suffer from clutteritis.

Hi jthomas, I have to, you are totally right, very cluttered. Its a learning curve, sometimes you see something that the camera does not, or should that be, the camera see's what the person doe's not. :? Thanks for your honest and valued opinion  pip
