Thank you all who have provided input. It is evident that the people having trouble with Windows 8 and no touch screen have other issues. Perhaps it is their particular computer or how they have it set or how they use it but I'm also happier to go with one without a touch screen.

I was looking at the third one over with the i7.

All the memory and processor you can afford is well and good, but don't forget screen resolution. I'm assuming you will be editing megapixel files. The above unit has a 1.4 MP display. Full HDTV is 2MP. And you share that with the toolbars.
One more thing to think about!

OK, now I'm going to get loads of abusive answers and people telling me I'm a narrow minded idiot.
Here goes-if I see anyone telling me they took a picture with their IPhone I don't look. It's a phone not a camera.

Recently saw a Apple TV ad claiming half the photos taken each day are on iPhones.
Also saw an article (WSJ?) reporting that the major camera manufacturers are discontinuing about 20% of their product lines, mostly low end P&S, because of the competition from smartphones. The good news? Now the camera manufacturers can concentrate on the "quality" models we all know and love!

If you want to learn more about this process and view an incredible image (16gigapix, 1920 photos) of Machu Picchu, go to http://www.gigapixelperu.com/Welcome.html
Besides the image there are links to all the info about the equipment and process used. Really impressive.

Small split keyring circles will solve most of the problems mentioned here. They are inexpensive at most hardware stores.

I use split rings but they are difficult to remove. So I add a snap swivel from a fishing supply store to provide a quick release end. They are light, small, quick to release and strong. Depending on your comfort level, get ones rated for at least 50 lb.

Jerry, why didn't you just give them the entire list? :-)

Another route:
On a PC, go to C:\Windows\System32\charmap.exe Brings up a file of all the character/marks available in all the typefaces in your system. It gives the Alt code for each one and a copy control. I keep a shortcut to this handy little program on my start menu.

Just arrived in Calgary from Uk. Will be spending week in Kootenay and week in Yoho. Where is best place to photograph bears?

Want to see bears? Head for the county dump. However, the bears may be obscured by the gulls and pigeons ...

All of the above are good suggestions, especially Valley of Fire at sunrise. If you have the time (and wife agrees)head out to Death Valley. Two+ hrs from the strip. Plan to be there before sunrise, and on your way back by 9 (you don't know hot). Pick your sites ahead of time, and set up for sunrise. Can be very dramatic, but hot in Sept, even at 6am.

I have CS5 and do a lot of pans.
has anyone ever found when a large number of pics (say over nine,) the finished pan is broken up in to two pans one under the other.
what do I do in this case ?????

Have you tried Microsoft ICE? It is free. (If you use Apple, read no further.)
Will stitch almost unlimited number of images in a rectangular pattern. No idea how wide a single row can be.

Or go to microsoft.com and search for Image Composite Editor

What time of year were you there?

We were there Dec 27 2008. Heard that the cruise ship scheduled for the next day could not enter the harbor due to the winds. The islands are exposed and low. Roads outside of Stanley are all but nonexistent. Photo is our caravan to a penguin colony.

Visited the Falklands 3 years ago via cruise ship. Make sure that your mono/tripods are sturdy, as it can be very, very WINDY! Even on calm days.

. Does anyone make double-sided photo paper?

Red River Paper does. I used it to make some calendars last year.

So does Epson, but it is hard to find on their website.

Would like to buy a used copy of lightroom 4. Must be legit copy with good serial number.

Check Ebay. Don't be in a hurry. I found mine in 2 weeks for $60 as a buyitnow offer while auctions were going for about $110.
Right now Adorama, for example, is offering LR4 for $69 on Ebay.

All of my dark room supplies came from a full-service Photo store in San Lorenzo named Denevi's. Does anyone else out there remember this shop?

Yes, I remember that shop. A photographer's paradise. You name it, they had it. Used to drive up from Gilroy in the '70's to replenish my needs. Always crowded on weekends.
