At least for me, any case I'm going to use is going to need to have a way to also carry at least one spare battery safely (not thrilled with carrying batteries in my pockets). Looks like the Amazon Basics, medium point and shoot case is the only real option, but I can't say that I'm thrilled with it. I would really like a more form fitting, hardshell type case, like the other one mentioned above, but they just don't provide for carrying a spare battery. Frankly, these are great little cameras, but they do eat up a battery in a big hurry and leaving the house without a spare is not a good idea!

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Market adoption of a new technology is graphed like a hockey stick. It has to have a certain "critical mass of viability" before it takes off like a rocket as the next "must have." The first truly viable hybrid, the Prius, was conceived in the early 1990s and introduced in Japan in 1997. 11 years later, I bought one. It was the best, most versatile and reliable car I ever owned, until a drunk redneck in a pickup ran off the road and destroyed it. It had 186,565 miles on it, and still drove as if new.

Those working to make viable energy sources for electric cars know all the practical issues better than we do. Those issues will be solved by people with positive attitudes and creative minds. There was a time about 120 years ago when roads were mud, gasoline was sold in tins, there were no "filling stations", and you had to do your own maintenance on a car.

As my grandfather used to say, "Oh, ye of little faith in the future, just look to the past and get a clue about how things work." Just about every objection to cleaner forms of energy comes from people stuck in their current paradigm. Just about every solution will come from creative people who work *outside* that paradigm.

I think the big question is whether or not electric vehicles really are using cleaner energy. Obviously, exhaust emissions are eliminated on EV's and that's a big plus. However, how the electrical power used to charge the batteries is generated needs to be considered and most of it is now either from burning coal or natural gas and Lord help us if anyone even suggests going back to building nuclear power plants. I don't think it's going to happen no matter how bad we might need it. We also need to consider the fuel consumed, the toxic metals needed, and the pollution involved in the manufacture and future disposal of the batteries needed. Not to mention the actual process of mining and refining of the exotic materials needed to ramp up to the scale we are talking about here.

This is what I've been referring to when I previously stated that we need to take a good look at the whole picture before we go "All In" on electric vehicles.

I have also questioned how safe these massive battery packs are in a crash and even routine charging. While gas burns readily, the heat generated by a shorted battery can be many, many, times hotter and more explosive than gas has ever been. It's something to at least consider and I for one will never charge an EV inside my garage even if it does become commonplace to do so.

I'm still looking for a good protective case for my new/used RX100-VA and have actually sent back a couple that I thought might work, but was not happy with after receiving them. What I want is a close fitting, protective case that is at least semi-waterproof and has a small pocket or pouch for at least 1 spare battery, maybe 2. The cases I've tried that had any room for spare batteries were so big I could nearly put another entire camera in them. It just doesn't make sense to me to buy a compact camera, then put it in a case that's nearly twice the size! Anyway, I would appreciate any viable suggestions and thank you for your input in advance.

While I do think that electric vehicles (like it or not) are going to be a big part of our future, I really think that the "Plug-In Hybrid" may be the best overall option, at least for now. Being able to use either electric or gas power makes good sense and they could compliment each other for a long time to come. However, the research I've done on currently available Plug-ins has revealed to me that the electric range is currently very limited compared to the full electric cars. Most in the order of only 50 miles on electric power. I guess that's good enough to get you around town on electric power, but at least for me, this range would have to increase considerably before I'd buy one of these vehicles. While, I realize that having both systems on board adds weight and takes up space, which makes it somewhat of an engineering challenge, surely they can come up with a more viable solution to the "Plug-In Hybrid" concept.

Frankly, I am also still concerned about what happens to these large battery systems when in a crash? We all know that shorting out a battery can cause arc welding temperatures and conditions and even outright explosions. It is also well known that Lithium Ion batteries can be shorted out by penetrating or crushing them and many a laptop or phone has burst into flames when someone tried to pry up what was supposed to be a non-user replaceable battery in an attempt to replace it and extend the life of the made to be disposable device. How are these batteries going to survive in a serious crash and not make the end result even worse? Also are electric car batteries going to be replaceable or are these vehicles going to be made to be disposable too? Honestly, rechargeable batteries could be a worse fire hazard than gas ever was and I've seen no one even mention this, much less address how they intend to control it and make it safe.

Once again, I think there is a future for electric vehicles, but we all need to take a good look at the whole picture before we commit our entire future to them. This especially goes for our government leadership that seems so anxious to do something "Green!" Personally. I'm not yet convinced that electric vehicles are all that "Green" anyway!

While electric cars are becoming more and more mainstream and we are being pushed more in that direction all the time, I hardly think they are going to save the world from climate change! In fact, I think that the manufacture and the disposal of the batteries is going to become a really big pollution issue in the very near future. I guess we're going to find out one way or another, but I do wish our leaders would take a serious look at the whole picture rather than jump on board the bandwagon just because it let's them appear to be doing something "Green."

I always thought the M50 represented a good value for the money and strongly considered buying one. However, I resisted due to the M-mount lens configuration. I personally felt that Canon was already moving away from this mount and development of lenses for it and even though there is a converter for using the older EF lenses, I just couldn't pull the trigger on one.

I've said this before and I'm going to say it again however unpopular it seems to be here! Digital photography and computer editing has now become more "Graphic Arts" than it was ever "Photography." However, I'm not saying that this is a bad thing, only that the line between the two has become so blurred that it is now indeed meaningless. Getting hung up on one side or the other is also meaningless and we should all try to embrace improvements in technology and techniques. As in anything, some folks are going to be better at this than others and it least in my opinion, this is the rub for many who use terms such as "Real Photography," etc.

Personally, digital cameras rekindled an old interest in me that had almost faded away after many years and frankly, I love the whole process! While I think I'm better on the camera side than the computer side of it and tend to lean toward minimal post processing, I continue to learn and enjoy it very much. Honestly, this old dog has indeed learned a few new tricks and I am both thankful and appreciative of the advancements in technology and technique that have made it all possible! Good luck and good shooting to all.

The Sony RX100 series is by far the best compact camera system available today, but it is pricey to say the least! I recently purchased a used RX100 VA and like it very much, but I doubt that it will ever replace my full sized DLSR for serious photography. It is great for day to day events, travel where size really matters, and because of it's small size it generally goes with me even when I would probably do without rather than carry the full sized DLSR, which is a very good thing. While it is indeed a very capable camera, it's small size can be a negative as well as a positive and at least for me it makes a good compliment to my primary DSLR rather than any sort of replacement. Can't really have too many toys anyway! Good luck and good shooting to all.

I loved my K-1000 and still have it and a good collection of manual focus lenses that I now occasionally use on my Pentax K3. I'm pretty sure the K-1000 is still functional, but I no longer have any real interest in shooting film. Anyway, I see these come up for sale, in full working condition, all the time for less than $100.00. At that price, I'll just keep it whether it works or not.

It sounds to me that your computer is too slow to play the files. XAVS-C files are like 50MB/s, which puts a lot of demand on your graphics card.

To default to VLC right click on a file and choose "choose another app". From the context menu choose VLC and check the "always use this app" checkbox at the bottom.

Yeah, I agree that it's probably a speed problem with my older computer. At least VLC tries to play the files, where Windows Media Player just comes up with a message saying it can't play them.

Also appreciate the info. on how to default to VLC. You've been very helpful indeed!

I have installed the VLC Media Player on my photo laptop and after using it for a couple days I've found it to be pretty good (far superior to Window Media Player). However, it still won't play the XAVC S-4k videos I shot previously and hoped to be able to view. It tries to play them because the audio runs fine, but the video stays locked on the opening scene and I'm not sure why. The XAVC S-HD videos do play, but with a jerky, non-continuous flow which makes me think the problem is my old computer (possibly a memory or speed issue). However, on a bright note, I was able to convert the videos I could previously only watch on my new/used camera to another format with the program's convert and save feature and I am now able to view them on my computer and TV as well. It takes quite awhile to convert one, but it did a nice job and I am pleased that I can now view these videos on multiple devices, but it appears that when shooting I will be sticking with the AVCHD format and I guess I can live with that for now.

On another note, does anyone using VLC Media Player know how to select it as my primary Media Player, so I can bypass Windows Media Player entirely? It would be nice to click on a file and have it come up in VLC rather than Windows, but I can't seem to figure out how to do that just yet.

Anyway, I guess it's on to editing software now and I really appreciate all the recommendations and information provided here. I've got a lot to learn about digital video and my primary interest is in stills photography anyway, but I am going to try to teach this old dog some new tricks and appreciate your input. Good luck and good shooting to all.

While I agree with the "Shrinkflation" thing getting out of hand, I would also like to make another comment about the Yoplait containers. Why do they have to narrow from bottom to top? Seems like a very odd shape for a container to make the mouth/opening smaller than the base. This makes it more difficult to get the product out and due to issues with animals/wildlife getting their heads stuck in these containers, they now print a disclaimer on them asking us to crush them before disposal. Wouldn't it be better to change the shape of the containers and possibly consider not using plastic as well? Is this unique shape a marketing thing or what? Frankly, I just don't get it and avoid buying this product because of it.

Thanks for the software suggestions! I'll be looking into all of them and have already downloaded "VLCMediaplayer" to try it out.
