Steve R: I download your "brownish" picture to my Adobe Photoshop 10 ( I hope you do not mind ) and from"enhance picture/convert to b&w" I got the result seeing in the picture below. Does this help you ...?

This INMHO is the best result. Clear, sharp and great contrast

Ok here is one more look I opened the image in Photoshop elements, then converted it to black and white and made no adjustments.

All the responses here is the beauty of this forum. You get enough information to choose the one that works for you. Really like the pics.

I'm going to sound like jr1. How did this really good shot of a loved person get put onto such a crappy background? It has its flaws, but I have a feeling it is really what the person who took the picture wanted.

This image demonstrates the difference between a snapshot and a portrait IMHO

i'd like to know how long it took you, brave people, to correcte this(no adjective, let's stay polite!) image?
and i would politely say: take the time to learn how to make portraits and do it again.
this might be a good illustration as an answer to the fellow who asked here recently "why learn how to take pictures, our DSLRs do it allways very well!"

To all of that I reply amen. As I mentioned in a previous post this picture was mailed to my wife by her sister (yes snail mail) and she asked me to fix it. Not wanting to start one of those "discussions" I tried to fix it but as I am not one who does portraits, I did not have the skills so I went to this wonderful forum that is filled with friendly and helpful faces and as usual they came to my aid. I have attached the picture I started with so you can all see the issues I was faced with. The two biggest being the natural side lighting and the minimal contrast on the right hand side of the image. Once again proving the adage "nothing is perfectly useless, it can always be used as a bad example"!

I have tried just about all the combinations of bracketing so that I could compare the results and for my money (or lack thereof) Aperature priority provides the best results. Here are two that I took in aperature priority and then processed in photomatix.

The photo is quite soft and blurry. It also looks like he was super imposed on the background. I can lighten the face, but it really does not improve the image much.

I agree with your assessment! I was given a very low quality printed image to start with. So I had to scan it then remove the poor background then I added a new layer and put him on top. It proves the adage that no good deed ever goes unpunished! Wendy if you can lighten the fact I will really appreciate it very much. Thanks Don

I love my Sony A65 for its 10fps continuous auto focus. Went to Jamestown Colony yesterday with the family and got some excellent shots of a docent firing a musket. Here are 2 from a series of 15.

Well if you are going to Canada Banff National Park is a must see. You will see Elk, Deer, all kinds of birds, black Bear, Mountain Goats and Sheep and if you get as lucky as I did you will see a Grizzly.
