You said it was a push-pull. If so, it sure is not a prime.

At first, that is what I thought, but after going back on the site, I realized it was a prime lens. This looks like a great deal for you. Wish it was mine!

Larry, that lens I spoke about is a prime 400 f5.6. He is asking $750. You might want to speak to him. This lens looks brand new. I would buy, just don't have the funds right now. Just trying to help out!

Larry, there is one for sale on fredmiranda.com for $750 that looks pristine. I believe it is the version one, which is the push/pull. Go on the site, click on buy/sell and in the box on the right, type in canon 400 f5.6 and you will see those for sale and those sold. Hope this helps.
I have been reading up on this lens and thought about buying this one, but funds are low since I just bought the 1Dx and a pristine 70-200 from a photographer on this site.
I see you are close to me in Stuart, Fl Good luck with your search, Joe

I'm curious, do you turn off IS for sports hand held? What about on your monopod?

It depends with hand held on the shutter speed. If I am under 1/500, it is still on. Over that, off. Monopod, I turn off the IS.
When I had my 300 f2.8 on the Nikon D4, I left VR off with monopod as well. That was one sharp lens and for sports, it is a sought after lens. The only problem I had was the reach, even with using the 1.4 tele on the 300. That's why I am looking at the 400 or possibly 500 f4. I want to fill the frame!
Taken in 2014 at the Titan's practice field in Nashville with the 300 f2.8. Hope to get on the field this year when I come up to visit. I plan on renting the 500 f4 to try out.

I agree with terry44; having shot with Canon, Pentax, HP, Sony, Nikon and Rollei, it's the lenses and the shooter that make the real difference. Find the one that fits your hands and go for it. I have recently owned the Nikon D3 and D4 and now shooting with the Canon 1Dx. Make your pick and have fun!

As others have stated, the 70-200 f2.8 is my go to lens for sports. However, when I need more reach, you just can't beat the 300 f2.8, 400 f2.8, 500 f4 as well as the big boys. Having owned the 300, I loved it, it just wasn't long enough. Saving for the 400 with a 1.4 tele. The IQ on this lens is outstanding.
Personally, I would rent one and see how you like it. They are heavy and you will need a monopod for support, but nothing better for sports, in my opinion!

That is a real nice portrait shot. That is a super camera and lens combo you shot that one with. I do like the blurred background, I just wish the white onions (light spots) weren't so prominent.

It was about 2 when I took that photo and the reflections coming off I believe a vehicle produced those. Can't wait to really put this camera to the test. Hope to shoot some sports in the following weeks. Will see how it does with tracking.

Thank you all for your comments!

Received my new to me Canon 1Dx and 70-200 f2.8 lens and thought, what a better time to use it than our 100 year anniversary of our County.
This is a good friend of mine, who also happens to be the Mayor of Okeechobee. He was dressed up in his Seminole War garb of the day and giving a history lesson to all who would listen.
For the first portrait I have taken with this lens and randomly, I might add, I was impressed with the blur behind the image or bokeh.
Let me know what you think.
Settings: 1/250 @ f5, ISO 100, 195mm

When I had my Nikon D4 and 70-200 lens at shot some great portraits at 105mm.

Wow, never knew these existed. Not sure about the one from B&H. It would work if you are not going to swing the camera! lol

Butch; if you are in manual mode, nothing should change unless you change it. If you are in auto ISO, that would change, but only that to my knowledge. Your Nikon will shoot with just about every Nikon lens made, however, it may not auto focus. You would have to do that manually as well. Hope this helps!

I used my D4 with the 300 f2.8 prime and always carried the lens with camera attached by the tripod mount. When I didn't, I either had the strap that attaches to the lens itself, or the black rapid strap attached to the tripod mount. Lenses, by their own accord can support the weight of any DSLR camera. It is the camera that can't support the weight of the largest of lenses when the lens is attached to the camera and you are supporting both by a strap from only the camera itself. Most damage occurs from the swinging and bouncing of the total weight combined and puts undo stress on the camera mounting system. I can't remember exactly, but believe my total weight of my setup with the D4 and 300 lens was just about 8 lbs.
I now have a Canon 1Dx and this is a tank of a camera and with walking around yesterday with just the 70-200 on it, was a bear after 5 hours.
Again, on the larger heavier lenses, the manufacture has mounting brackets to attach a strap to support the weight of the lens. Hope this helps!

Shot with XQD cards in my D4 and you have to make sure you push till it stops. Like another stated, strong spring. Wish all the pro DSLR's would incorporate the XQD system.
