Your call for reason should be accepted by all. I also use zip ties on all my bags just as an indicator that the bag was opened if nothing else. Regarding lenses being part of this, I would not expect DHS/TSA to weigh the rationale you suggested as that thought process is beyond those folks.

So if a thief cuts your zip ties, removes something and puts a zip tie back on, how long before you notice a problem?

Wire ties measure less than 1/4 inch wide.
Zip ties are wider than 1/4 inch.

Zip ties are what they show swat teams using on tv shows. Wire ties are what they use to tie the wires up on Computers, monitors, and dvd/vhs/cd players.

Thank you.

I just traveled to Norway with the same concerns and issues...

I used a large Pelican case and everything packed well and safe. I did use wire ties (over TSA locks) and a second set was taped inside the case (different color) with instructions to replace. Wire ties are important to keep the latches tight...spillage would be very bad.

I found you can "declare" excess value (only on dedicated hard cases like the Pelican) that will give coverage up to the declared value.
Check with your air line and insist because it is available. $5k in coverage was about $100

You need fill out the TSA form from on line ahead of time with serial numbers and values of each item and make copies.

Be sure the airport you fly from has the "excess value" forms to fill in for a declaration on the case.

My check in took nearly 3 hours when it was discovered after 10 calls that they did not have the needed form on hand. They had no way of charging me a fee.

So...I sent the Pelican off without the extra declared valuation, but felt fairly safe after talking with the airline management.

I was told it is an option worth the effort but so few ask for it they did not have any form on hand. They actually learned something from my inquiry.

So in conclusion... 1. use a Pelican case 2. fill out the TSA form with serial numbers and value (copy enclosed) 3. Inquire prior to the trip to your airline for the "excess value form" so you can be charged 4. buy the airline travel insurance when you purchase the ticket (worth it and adds $1000 to the case or luggage) 5. relax.

I got the bag at arrival in Norway in perfect condition with a TSA slip neatly filled in and put inside the case...the other blue wire ties were installed nicly with everything packed as I had it... life is good.

P.S. I did find that TSA locks are considered a joke outside the US and are usually cut off and thrown in the bag. Be sure to buy good quality colored wire ties instead... Also be ready to catch your bag as it comes off the carousel to avoid the 2 foot drop at some air ports (optional)...

Cheers

What are wire ties? I did a quick search and didn't get an answer. Are you referring to what I would call zip ties? Thank you.

I don't see the point to locking one's luggage, at least not for the flight. If the TSA wants to inspect the contents, they'll get inside, by whatever force necessary. The last thing I would want is for my luggage to arrive at the destination airport in pieces, contents scattered all over the baggage carousel. (I've seen that happen a few times over the years. Fortunately, not my luggage.)

I don't think TSA getting in is the problem. Isn't it the baggage handlers and others who have access to your luggage once it is past TSA?

Letmedance, I appreciate your optimism, but the link misses my point. My point is: What experiences have UHH members had with durable and safe cases for camera equipment, when that equipment must travel below the cabin? That is the information exchange I'm hoping for.

Why worry about it if your gear doesn't have to go below?

Good. Another bit of proof that wing nut cannot spell or know a word is misspelled when they see it.

More evidence of low intelligence? A poor education? Seems like you are right down there with Ken Hubert.

Spelling? And then there is another of your replies, "The whole FBI knows Lyin' Trump iOS crazy and they will get him."

But I am sure for you it is a typo, but if it is someone else it shows low intelligence and poor education.

So you cannot just say there will be no impeachment. You have to use juvenile insults. You do realize it does nothing to me but makes you look stupid. No, of course you don't.

Trump is crazy. Comey knows Lyin' Trump is crazy. The whole FBI knows Lyin' Trump iOS crazy and they will get him.

But shit...then we are stuck with Pence. A nut case who thinks one can pray away the gay.

Yeh, no juvenile insults in that response.
