Free-er than Picasa....

Faststone Image Viewer....http://www.faststone.org/

Because it has:

-The program Faststone Image Viewer
-Plus a portable version that you can put on a "flash","thumb","jump" drive and use on any computer without installing it. Use it from the external drive, including editing and saving edit changes back to your computer. Tremendous portable option.
-Plus a fairly extensive "downloadable" instruction manual.
-Plus, much more extensive tools than Picasa, including levels and curves
-Plus batch functions
-Plus the viewer/organizer is a "shell" that uses the standard Windows Explorer format, so it looks the same as if you go directly to your Pictures folders in Windows.
-And more

Oh, did I mention... Free Download, Shareware, Donation supported if you choose.
Free-er than Picasa.... br br Faststone Image Vie... (show quote)

Thanks saichiez, I will certainly look at it and try. Some of them are a little to complicated to me, as I am sure you will understand that I have not used any software in the past, and software seem to vary so much. Anyway thanks for your suggestion again

GIMP does just about everything Photoshop does. There is a bit of a learning curve but it's good and, so far as I know, carries no malware.

Thanks rps, im finding a lot of people seem to be recommending GIMP. Looks as thoughI will have to down load it anyway whether I use it or not :? pip

Hi everyone, Ive been a member since Christmas 2012 and quite new to photography. I am wondering is there any free photo editing software anyone can recomend. I dont want to do a lot of editing to my photographs, just simple things like leveling my horizons, amd maybe cropping. Thanks everyone Pip

Check out Irfanview as a photo viewer and basic editor. Lately I have been using FastStone. Both are free programs. Picasa has already been mentioned also. Bottom line is, there are some good choices for free, so try 'em all and see what fits.

I initially wanted PP just for small tweaks but found it to be so interesting (and fun) that I wanted to do more. When you switch programs you may know the basics but must learn a new system.
I have Lightroom and Elements and enjoy the heck out of both. They take time to learn, but I have that being retired. You will enjoy whatever program you use I am sure.

Thanks sodapop, I have heard they are both good programs, and will probably head down that road in the future  pip :D

I'm a Photoshop user myself but was put wise to PIXIR.COM, maybe I could have saved myself a lot of money as it's free. Maybe the minus is that it is an on line editor. Had a tweek with it & it covers most of what P'shop does. Maybe others on the forum can give an opinion of this site. According to their tower chart it equals PS (if not better), of course they would say that. Kitcar

Thanks for your suggestion, but at present I would not want to do on line editing. I appreciate your time and suggestion  pip

Hi Pip,
Good to see some more NorthEasterners on here!

As others have said, Picasa and Gimp are good. Picasa is very easy to use, and gives some pleasing results. I found gimp very daunting, and ended up getting a copy of Photoshop Elements (Costco in Gateshead have an offer starting this week! ) which to me is a good halfway house, easy to use the basics, but plenty to learn.

HI MARA, nice to here from a local. Yeah Im finding gimp to be a bit of a tuffy to work my way round. I think Picasa is all I need at present, its pretty basic but im just starting off so it will do. I will check Costco though with that deal. Thanks Ian, looking forward to hear from you again  :D pip

Jpegview is the first one I use when I down load my photos

Just to do minor adjustments use Photofiltre

for Raw have http://www.scarablabs.com/scarab-darkroom

All the above are free like the others have suggested I have Photoscape
and free version fast stone which can do Raws.

Hi Rick, thanks, these are all new to me, and will certainly be trying them out. Im pleased I joined UHH. Everyone is so helpful  :D pip

Have to recommend Picmonkey, as it was suggested to me. Free and VERY easy to use. If you like it, you can upgrade for $4.99 per month to get other features. Does a lot of neat things, and I really enjoy using it.
Debbie

Hi Debbie, thanks, this is a new one to me, I will certainly check it out. There must be more out there than I thought there would be, cheers :D  pip
