Hi Bill - Thanks for your kind words. I would have answered sooner but yesterday I got back from a couple of weeks in Alaska to face several hundred emails. I lived in Colorado for a little over 40 years. Most of that time at 8300 feet, west of Boulder, off Sugarloaf Road.

Regarding the Yellowstone post, lots of posts talked about the wonderful tourist things you can do in the park. So, I wanted to suggest some of the spenders that aren’t on everyone’s bucket list. The original poster is from the East and will be here for only a short time. Unless he specializes in wild animal shots his time here could be better spent than waiting days or hours for a perfectly lighted animal shot. In Yellowstone, where the animals are somewhat domesticated by the millions of tourists who see them every year, it is not difficult to get many shots of buffalo, bears, elk… But, you can easily do that at a zoo. What is really unusual for an easterner is places like Chief Joseph pass, Bear Tooth Pass, the world class thermal features, and the vast empty plains butting against the Rockies.

Anyway, that’s what I was trying to say,

Best of luck – Dan

P.S. Speaking of Backpacker magazine, I worked for Holubar Mountaineering for several wonderful years.

Dan,
We will be flying into Idaho Falls then driving to Jackson Hole to spend thee days to explore Grand Tetons Park.
From there we drive through Yellowstone to Gardiner, which will be our base to visit Yellowstone for five days. Then driving to Bozman to catch the plane back to Tampa, FL.
Chief Joseph Pass and Beartooth Pass look great, but they seem too distant for us unless we were starting our trip from Billings.
What is your opinion?
Can you suggest anything else along our itinerary?
Bob

For an extended manual, Darrell Young's Mastering the Nikon D7200 would be the best thing for you. It's not a book on how to take pictures, but goes more in depth on each function of the camera than the manual does. I have the book on the D800, and the section on focusing, for instance, is 26 pages.

My vote is for Darrell Young's Mastering the Nikon D7200.

It includes one of my photos.....the Pileated Woodpecker

I purchased a Vaio Z canvas, https://www.amazon.com/VAIO-Canvas-12-3-Laptop-Windows/dp/B015QDEXVW/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1470487409&sr=1-3&keywords=vaio+z+canvas about 6 months ago and it is one of the fastest computers I have ever used and it's designed for the artist/photographer specifically. I have the 512 GB model but carry a 2TB WD hard drive with me for backup and ultimately push everything up to other backups at home and in the cloud. I never keep much on the laptop unless I'm working on the photo. Great computer to do PP on with the pen. Like working on a Wacom Cintiq.

This looks good but the screen size is 12.3". For me, this is too small when viewing Lightroom full screen.

I doubt you would save much money by dropping the internal drive. Disk drives are getting so cheap these days - I just got a WD 4TB My Passport drive for $150 a week ago at Target (USB 3). Put my older 1 TB drive (USB 2) in the drawer for this new larger drive but I have a NAS 3 TB drive and a 2 TB USB 3 drive I still use for backup of all photos.

Also wireless is a bit slower than USB 3 but then "look MA - no wires" might be worth clearing the clutter. I like the USB drive for quicker searching but the wireless does the job too (just slower).

And a 1 TB drive is not large anymore with all the bigger camera resolutions (the reason I went with 4 TB this time).

All suggestions are helpful. Might as well stick with an internal HD + SSD. I already have (2) 2TB passports for backup, but I don't want to keep them hooked up all the time.

Thanks

I would like to lower the cost of a new laptop that will be used mainly for Photoshop CC. I was looking at Gaming laptops configured:
Intel i7 quad processor, 16GB DDR4, Nvidia 960M 4GB, 15.6 or 17" screen, 1 TB HD + 256 SSD. cost about $1350 and up.
I was reading about WD's My Cloud for storage using WiFi. No USB wires to connect. Would it be practical to drop the internal Hard Drive from the laptop purchase, and to use the My Cloud for photo storage, music, and documents instead? SSD only for start up and programs? I could perhaps save some $$.

I like the schoolgirl look, but with the facial expression in the red hat. Just my opinion.

I subscribe to Kim Komando. It's mainly about computers & some photography but she also has helpful hints about pretty much everything. Here's a link to her article about what day to buy airline tickets:

Thanks for the link, lots of tips.

Thanks to all for the info. I'm taking your advise; going to book sooner.
Maybe fly into Idaho Falls because we will be leaving from Gardner to go to the airport for home. Total flight time about 6 hours, will be tired.
My wife checks all the discount sites daily.

Is renting a 4 wheel drive SUV worth the extra cost of a standard SUV in late May?

My family and I have decided to fly from Tampa FL to Jackson WY May 2017 for a ten day visit.
Today, the tickets are $597 ea. If we wait, do you think we will find a better price?

Check out Heart Six Ranch website in Moran, Wy. A great place to stay just 5 miles from Grand Tetons park entrance.

Rooms are available May 16-18, 2017 at the Heart Six Ranch.
What do you think of flying into SLC, driving to Moran, spending two days in the Tetons, then driving to Yellowstone, and using Gardiner as the home base to return to the park each day. Then, if practical, drive the Beartooth highway to Billings for the flight home to Tampa, FL. If the cost of two different air ports is prohibitive, I will have to drive back to SLC.

An alternative would be to fly to Billings, drive the Beartooth, stay in Gardiner or Cody, then go to Moran for a couple of days, fly out of Billings.
