Thanx for the info Phil. I am using the B&W 10 Nd filter but I haven't shot the gray card. I'll try that. I was using the nd10 mostly to slow water falls shots.
I use my 6 stop with time lapse -
similar sunset (so the orange 'tint' is the color of the sky) - different location: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSlnr0d7ZCA
and this one also thru 6 stop ND - but in the middle of the day - no tint at all:

Nice shot Phil. When I use the 10 stop ND on my 5D mk2 I get an orange tint even on a bright day. Have you found that to be true if not what brand of filter are you using?
I use B&W filter - I have 10 stop and 6 stop ... I have found that when I couple the 2 together I get some purple tinting. Experimentation though - I once tried shooting a grey card for WB - it helped a bit ... if the tint is real bad I would convert the BW - most of my long exposure are done with a BW conversion in mind (is how I see the shot)
I find I use my 6 stop more now - especially for time lapse.
Thx Phil

The people on the dock did a good job at not moving during that 140 sec....nice shot
the people on the dock were 'ghostly' images - they were darkened in pp ... good observation :)
The same shot - but at 1/10 sec exposure - but I prefer the long exposure on the water ... pp was needed on the people for the long exposure - but not on this one ... (anyway - I'm not a National Geographic photographer - so pp is allowed :) )

I read a story the other day (wish I could find it to quote it precisely) - it went something like this:
Socialite woman in NY comments to photog - these are amazing photographs - tell me, what kind of camera got these?
Later at a dinner given by said socialite he managed to comment - wow this is amazing food - tell me, what kind of stove you used?
:)
my two bits - its combination of camera and photog - my wife has been using a P&S for years - the other day I was commissioned to shoot a running race - I gave my wife my 40D (backup) - set to aperture priority (f9) ISO400 - and set her loose by herself - she got some amazing shots - composition was great - framing awesome etc etc ...
anyway - encourage her - teach her the technical details slowly - she'll get it quite quick
:)

I gotta share this ... I contacted a guy yesterday about some spare batteries for my Canon 5D Mk2 (aftermarket) - didn't want to fork out $80 at the store. This Craigslist guy had some aftermarket ones for $25 ... I emailed him and mentioned I would like to acquire 2 batteries - he responded with an email of 4 pictures and the words - My finger is pointing at where the batteries are. 1st picture was of a box with his name and address, 2nd picture of a pathway to the back part of a house, 3rd picture of a open-like table with the box on a lower shelf - 4th picture sort of similar to the 3rd.
I was totally confused cause I wanted to meet the guy, pay him, and get some batteries - I managed to get him to call me ... and this is what he said:
He told me that he'd been selling for years on CL - leaving the goods out like this for the buyer to collect who would then leave payment in the box for whatever they took - the honor system - and he has never been stiffed. (He works 13 hours a day away from his home - so his time is stretched)
So - I grabbed my 2 batteries - and left $50 in an envelope for him ... walked away smiling - cause my faith in humanity had just been given a great big boost.
I use a free app called Long Time on my iPhone to determine exposure ... it works very well

Thanks for all the replies everyone - totally agree with the opinion about/of #2 - and will tackle it with photoshop :) - unfortunately a change of position would not have helped because I was squashed into the space I was occupying :) ...
