Okay, I tried to warn you so if you have nightmares, it's too late now. This is what a Sippy looks like. Unfortunately, even history's greats could not do anything with a face like this (one cannot make chicken soup out of chicken poop).

I created this piece with a digital brush that emulates charcoal and it was an experiment in a technique I had been thinking about: starting with a light neutral grey underlay and building the structure of tone on top of it.

In days past, drawing with charcoal was a pain in the butt for I would get as much of it on me as would the paper. Now that I can draw digitally with brushes that emulate various media, it is far more enjoyable not to mention erasable and work in layers.

This is a quick charcoal sketch of a young cat doing what cats do best: lay about.

This is an experiment of a digital painting using the "ink lines and color wash" technique.

It starts with a sketch using a fine-line 3-pixel ink brush. Stray lines and "boo-boos" are erased and shadow hatching is added.

Colors are laid-in on a lower layer so the ink lines remain on top. A glazing brush set to low opacity flow results in an ink wash. A blending brush is used to move paint and achieve blended colors.

Back in my tole painting days, horses were a common subject for they went well with the folk-art themes. The process starts with a sketch followed by blocking in the underlay colors. I chose a pallet of hues and mopped them around to create the basic shape of the subject. Darker tones where the shadows will go and lighter in the areas with highlights to bring out the contours of the shape.

Digital paint is applied in multiple layers. This comes in handy when edits (oh shits) need to be corrected or deleted and the opacity of each layer, along with its blending style, can vary from one to another. I enjoy painting the eyes because they tend to bring a subject to life so I save them for the last step in my sessions.

I wanted to practice by doing a digital painting emulating charcoal, a pencil, and a blending brush. I may be showing my age with this one by choosing to do a young woman who looks like she could have been a pinup model in the 50's (truthfully, it ended up looking that way).

Her face had a faint hard pencil sketch which I eliminated and I used multiple layers of paint blending on top of layer upon layer creating the softness of the shadows I wanted to create.

Yesterday I had a really nice ride through the Pine Barrens on my bike. I came across a scene that I had photographed before; but landscapes are never the same from day to day, so I took out the tripod and tried for a decent composition. I used an old Nikkor 35mm f/2 lens and then added some soft focus and glow from NIK to give it a more painterly style. No in camera effects today. This is all computer generated.

One lens, two perspectives taken of the Bass Pro Shop in Columbia, MO. Both pictures were taken with the Canon 8-15 fisheye, set at 15mm. Standing at the same spot. One picture was taken with the lens parallel to the ground giving it the wide angle effect, the other picture the lens was tilted giving it the fisheye effect.

I think it's a fun lens to use.

It's "Derby Day" so I painted a horse with jockey at the track. It's fast and loose so it is more of an artistic rendering than realistic rich in detail.
