Reading a lot about the terrific and unusual blooming wild flowers around Borrego Springs. Has anyone been and do you have any suggestions for a drive trip there from western Colorado?

Well if you use I-40 or I-15, etc. Go South through the Joshua Tree N.P. There are likely flowers there too. From the So. end of Joshua Tree you can take the I-10 to a couple different ways to the (CA) Anza Borrego S.P. The faster route would be by (CA) SR 111, entering Anza Borrego S.P. from the East. Borrego Springs is a town and Indian village with in the Anza Borrego S.P.
I was there for the last bloom. I live 1 hour away. It is unusual and only happens after very wet winters. 17 was one and 19 is expected to yield another great bloom. I don’t know that I would make the trip from Western Colorado just to see it, but if you were planning a short visit to nearby San Diego, it should be included in your itinerary. The flowers are impressive and you will see some unusual desert blooms. You will see large, colorful fields of wild flowers Go on line and google Anza Borrego Desert bloom, or something like that, and you will get an idea of what it is like. The other famous dessert bloom is in Death Valley, but I have not heard what they expect this year
We go almost every year, super-bloom or not. We love the stark desert beauty.
If you can arrange to do so, go during the week, NOT on the weekend!
It will be super-crowded on the weekends - the experience can be rather unpleasant when that crowded.
I agree with the poster who suggested not going "just" for the desert bloom, but rather as part of a larger southern California trip.

I was there last week and the bloom is on. Some areas a bit more than others. But in the next few weeks it should get even better. Not sure how long it will last, but hopefully your trip is coming soon.
Here’s a link to a few amateur shots from my posting.
https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-581789-1.htmlNot sure if this link will work for you but it is to an article in the LA Times about the superbloom.

We stayed in Borrego Springs overnite so I catch get some nice morning light. There are several places there and they are all on the high side for pricing. You could stay in nearby Julian and drive in in the morning, but that takes about 45 minutes to an hour on a very winding road.
The super bloom right now is in Lake Elsinore. Outside of San Diego.

I was there in 2017 and it was a madhouse. Restaurants, no food, no gas, no lodging w/o reservations, no food in the grocery store. People all over the desert and not prepared for muddy conditions off road. Cars stuck all over the place. 4 wheel advisable if recent rains and you plan on back country drives. Wait for the cattipillars. Otherwise, spectacular.

Just outside of Corona/Riverside. WAY outside of San Diego. 75 miles north of San Diego, only 7 or 8 miles south of Corona/Riverside on the I15. I live in Corona, CA.

Go. Go. Go. I have been there in very good years and not so good years but it has always been worth the trip. Besides the flowers, there are many quite unusual metal sculptures of animals that are photogenic. Don't get waylaid by all that beauty in Utah as you pass through!
My wife and I have visited Anza-Borrego rather regularly in the last two decades, and have enjoyed the wildflower blooms. I don't want to deflate your trip idea - but frankly, I've never been overwhelmed by the display of flowers, especially from a photographic standpoint. The flower blooms are beautiful, but they don't quite bang me over the head. But, best wishes for a fine visit.
