Not the Camera.... GLASS!

If you can't afford the Sony RX10iv, the next best options for a Bridge camera would be the newest Canon SX70, which is the successor to a very good, also, SX60. The SX70 does not have a hot shoe. Another to consider is the Panasonic FZ80. Sony makes excellent pocket cameras. One, that I am interested in, is the HX99. Less than $500. An alternative to the more expensive RX100 series. These models come out so fast. I believe it has now reached Mark 6. Some uhh members think it is overpriced. Including me. The Sony RX10iv, is the best Bridge camera on the market today. It is an excellent travel camera. Good luck.

It really depends on what you want to shoot and where you want to view your pictures, as others have said here. If the photos are for facebook, it really doesn't matter what camera you use. I have some nice photos from early versions of the Panasonic you are looking at before I got bit by the dslr bug. The problem is I can't increase their size much, and they don't print very well (where size and the number of pixels can make a huge difference)--I am talking posters here. They look fine in Shutterfly type photo books.

That being said, as others have pointed out, there are a variety of cameras to choose from. If you really want something that fits in your pocket, my preference has been for the cameras in the Sony Rx100 series, but they are expensive. The original model though is cheaper. This camera does really fit in a pocket, and the quality of the pictures is excellent. I am really liking the rx100 vi with its longer lens, but it is quite expensive.

If pocketability isn't a major concern, my favorite is the Sony RX10 series. I haven't tried the version IV yet, but I liked the III a lot and found the image quality outstanding.

A lot of people I know have switched to Olympus or Panasonic m4/3 cameras and lenses. They are worth considering also.

Finally, my phone now can take photos that I find comparable to some of these less expensive, less than 1" sensor cameras. There is a limit to how much you can blow photos up with the phone pics, but I think the quality is good enough now that it would dissuade me from buying anything with less quality than an RX100 at this point. Also, really seriously think about what you might want to imagine for your photos. I loaned a camera to a friend of mine who used it on a safari. She never really used it because it was easier to use her phone. Then she wanted to blow up these wonderful animal photos she had to put on her wall--it couldn't be done, as the pictures got to pixelated too quickly (this was a few years ago, the phone cameras are much better now).

These, of course, are just my thoughts. Everyone has their favorites and in the end, while you can collect opinions here, you need to come to your own conclusions about what will work for you.

Did your friend try upsizing her phone pics with something like Photozoom or Topaz's new AI Gigapixel. Hopefully she didn't discard them and you can tell her about upsizing, as soon as you check out what's involved and make recommendations to her.

As you can tell with this nebulous type of question you ultimately get everyone's favorite camera from A to Z. Travel camera? Is it one that goes in your purse, in your jock strap, your pocket, your backpack, around your companions neck? You, and legions of others, should answer these questions before asking such a broad question anywhere. imho

Jock strap? Now that would be a unusual place to put your camera. I must say.

Might work. This was like 4 years ago though. I, am I am sure she would be pleasantly surprised if software could interpolate that well now. I have never been impressed by any of the upsizing programs I have used, but I know the AI is better now.

It was suggested to me that the Panasonic ZS70S is one of the best travel cameras.
Are there any other suggestions?

Zs 70K is much better. Same price. It is my travel camera but extremely sharp I sometimes just take it with me as my solo camera.

I love my Panasonic Lumix zs100. And the price has come down because there is a new model.

Replacing with Olympus

I already sold all my heavy Nikon equipment and replaced it with an Olympus OMD em10ll mirrorless and two lenses: Lumix 20mm 1.7 and Olympus 45mm 1.8.

I also have a ZS100. Love it. It has a 1" sensor, an EVF, and is pocketable.

"It's about the optics stupid!"

Indeed. It is.

M43 glass has many options from kit to pro. All are good and pro is excellent. And lighter and smaller and a little cheaper than Crop or FF. A high % of my favorite lenses are Olympus M43.

I have a Canon SX710HS I got to go to Disney World. Closed, it's the size of a pack of cigarettes. It has a 40x zoom, will focus as close as 1/2", 20 mp, and it's light. Get a small case with a belt loop. Comes in newer 720, 730, and 740 versions, $400 or less.
