Nikon combo for sports banquet

Will be taking family and player shots at our high school baseball teams banquet. There will be both outdoor and indoor shots. Its senior night so there will be shots taken with players and their parents as well as team photos. I have the D7200 with a Tamron 70-200 G2 and a Nikon 18-140 with Godox flashes. Was thinking of renting a D850 and maybe a good 24-70 lens just for this night. Thoughts on if its worth the combo or just getting a good lens for the family and group shots. Space inside can be close so the 70-200 is out.

Unless you just want to try a D850, your 18-140 should do fine, since it sounds like you’re going to be using flash, or rent the 17-55 2.8 DX for your D7200. Nikon made these gems before they had a full-frame camera. https://www.lensrentals.com/rent/nikon-17-55mm-f2.8g-ed-af-s-dx

The D-850 has a different (I think better) menu button set-up that you’d have to familiarize yourself with and though it has other size options, do you really need a 45mp image for this event, not to mention storage?

Shouldn't be a need to rent a D850. The D7200 should be enough to handle both indoor and outdoor shots for someone who knows how to use the settings. The 18-140 lens would be able to do the job also. Good luck with the banquet.

I just did a baptism shoot and used my 24-70mm lens. I had one flash pointed mostly up with a bounce card. I didn't want to be distracting since I was in a church service and all went very well! If you are renting the D850 then get it for at least the full week prior to your sports event. You need to become very familiar with the camera and its menu. Perhaps watch a youtube that goes over the whole camera so you can get comfortable with the knobs and buttons.

I agree that you should be fine with what you have, especially with the shorter zoom. If you decide to rent a D850 (or D500) the big difference will be that almost every change or adjustment you would need to make will be accessible without having to go into the menus at all.

Will be taking family and player shots at our high... (show quote)

My rule of thumb is never rent anything unless you can operate it flawlessly especially for an event. Go with tried and true.
For outdoor I would use my SB-900 and use fill flash either straight up with built in reflector or with Nikon supplied diffusion dome. For indoors, same flash, aimed up and back.

if you feel you need a second body/lens combo then consider renting a d7200 with maybe a 50mm or 85mm prime lens...

Just buy a 35mm f1.8. You should be able to shoot everything with a normal prime.

A normal lens might not be wide enough to do table shots.

I used a normal lens for weddings all through the 1970s, I was able to do table shots without issues.

As others have said, that 18-140mm lens should be the best option. I shot a lot of social functions that that lens and a D7100 a few years back. That zoom range will handle everything and will give you decent exposures also. I definitely would not rent a D850 for this....you don't need the pixels and you will be processing those huge files for weeks. You will not need a portrait quality lens for this and the resulting pics will be 4x6 probably keepsake size.

Your 18-140 should be all you need. Seems to me, back in 2003-2006, I was doing the same type of shots for a local newspaper and I had a Nikon 24-120, I believe. Yeah, that 18-140 AM the Lens. Good Shooting !
