The best Nikon is the one you have in your hands.
That said, one main advantage of mirrorless camera's is the fact that what you see in the viewfinder is what you get in the final image (exposure wise). It is a real advantage if your finicky about your correct exposures.

There are a lot of good cameras that took/take landscape picture before the 850 or the Z7. New doesn't mean better.

When considering a camera consider the available glass. There is a LOT of glass for the 850. I have heard of focus issues with Nikon F lenses on the Z7. There are reviews on You Tube.

I use both. For flying birds or fast moving animals the D850 is my choice. For other subjects from macro to landscapes both are excellent. I use the Z 7 when I want a lighter and quieter camera.

Either camera will give you phenomenal results. I have the d850 and love it and especially for landscape. BUT the new Z7 will allow you the see in real time exactly what your picture will look like . No chimping. Compose and shoot . Nikon just came out with a new 24-70 f/2.8. Their new lenses are supposed to be optically phenomenal. It has an extra ring on it you can program for say it being an external aperture or other things . And it has an external LCD that can be set to display information that you may want to know . Like what the aperture is or the distance to the subject, ect , ect . I believe it costs $2295.00 so not cheap. It’s like 25 percent smaller and 18 percent lighter. Has dual autofocus motors focusing two lens groups at once . For faster and closer focusing. Similar to what Sony is doing. Should be a great lens . If it’s following suit with its other lenses it may be par focal somewhat. So much less focus breathing . That’s just a guess. So what I’m saying is with the new body you will be buying into a new lens system. This system of camera and body will be lighter and possibly superior optically to the old lenses. And you will be able to adapt to many of the old lenses. I’m hearing good things about the adapted lenses. Just saying. Both cameras are great for landscape. 24 -70 is a very useful lens for landscape. So there is some food for thought.. best of luck on your decision.

Personally speaking, as an owner of the D850 which I absolutely love, I won't upgrade until I find something in a newer model that will help me improve my work. Although I do like the reduced weight of the mirrorless, I'm holding off until I can test some of the newer lens designs. My recommendation would be two fold. If you own a D850, stick with it a bit longer, if you own neither, rent the both and test for yourself. Perhaps you might rent the Z7 just to do your own testing. Whether one camera is better than another needs your personal perspective. If you do any testing, let us know what YOU think. Best of luck.

I really don't know. I am not that advanced. That being said, its amazing to me that (and I don't mean to be disrespectful) if someone is contemplating such expensive cameras, their skill level should be high enough to make that determination themselves.

Nikon released two new mirrorless full frame cameras. The Z6 and Z7. Two introductions, I think, exceeded their sales expectations, especially, with the current blockbuster D850, still on the market. Nikon, is going to put emphasis on mirrorless cameras in the future. Regardless, of the popularity of the D850. Because it is the future. I would choose the D700 over the D3s. It was the very first Nikon full frame camera, I saw at a high end Photo Shop in late 2008. It had a whopping 12.1 megapixels. And was king, at that time. Some photographers refuse to part with it. Because, it is a tank. It's a matter of choice, as to which camera serves you the best. The lens should be the determining factor for outdoor photography.

I have neither camera. I have watched and read various reviews, some from people I know. It doesn't sound as though the Nikon Z's EVF is up to task yet for live action. There are some advantages to a mirrorless, particularly to the native lenses. Beyond my appreciation but the proximity of the rear element to the sensor is appreciated by some. The weight and handling is often talked about, mostly fondly.

Everyone is apparently thrilled with the D850. I don't know anyone that bought a D850 that wanted mirrorless.

As others have said, "outdoor photography" is fairly broad. Last fall I had a D800 and a D500. The D800 had developed some problems and I was considering the D850 as it appears to be a great camera. Then Nikon came out with the Z7. Since I already had a D500 for wildlife and other fast moving objects I went with the Z7 as it met my needs for a landscape and object camera. It has not disappointed me. However, if I had not had the D500 I would most likely have gone with the D850. I do like the lighter mirrorless though and I love how I can hand hold at very slow shutter speeds and still get a sharp image; it is also great for street photography. No one call tell you what is the "best" camera for your needs. You need to do research, determine your specific needs, and then buy a camera that fills your needs. Good luck.
