This looks like a nice compact camera. I have the CoolPix A900, that I carry everywhere with me instead of lugging my big camera around, but am considering upgrading from the A900 to the A1000, has anyone else checked out this camera? I like the looks of it and it has an EVF and shoots raw. Just looking for some friendly opinions/comments.
Thanks in advance!
I do not have one but looked seriously at buying for trips, however most reviews gave it a 3ish rating (out of 5). All complained how long it takes to process an image in RAW (if that is your preference). Although lots to like about it (35x zoom, tiltable screen, etc) here was typical complaints:
"Unfortunately, the EVF is hard to use, the RAW files slow the camera down so much you will probably use Jpg, and the image quality from the tiny 1/2.3-inch sensor is no better than smartphones. Add in a substantial price hike, and the Coolpix A1000 ends up being somehow less appealing than its predecessor, despite offering more on paper."

The main difference is 4k and raw on the 1000. It has lower rating, and is bigger and heavier. Same sensors, etc. Your 900 is a good camera.
What you have to do is decide if raw and 4k are worth $900, or keep your 900 and shoot jpg.

The Coolpix A1000, which has not been released, will be selling for $477. It will have a maximum focal range to 840mm, 4K, and RAW. The price is competitive to other compact cameras, in other name Brands. To be released sometime during March 2019.

When I was reading about it in Dec - Santa always treats me to a nice present - believe release date was Jan 25th, now see March 19th. Must have gotten moved back a couple months, which is not unusual.

The month of March begins tomorrow. So, your wait won't be too long.

My bad......I was comparing p900/p1000 prices.... The a900 and a1000 are closer to price.... The a1000 may shoot raw, but it drops in pixels......16 still isn't bad. Here is a link comparing the a models

I bought the P1000 to use as a travel camera when I fly. The weight is no more then a regular Nikon body with a telephoto lens so weight is not an issue with me. My issue is the new raw format .nrw as my software doesn't support this file. I use Corel Paintshop Pro 2019 ultimate and Topaz Studio. I can convert to a .dng file but it loses one third of the pixels. Have contacted both Nikon and Corel with unsatisfactory results.

My thoughts to Jerry. That's why I gave the wrong price comparison at first....... Got caught and had to correct....

Hi PeggySue. I had a brief hands on of this Nikon in our local camera store on Tuesday. I was interested in comparing it to my Lumix TZ80 which I use a lot hiking & cycling. 1st impressions were that its very similar both in size and performance - the EVF (which is a MUST for me) is just like the Lumix being a bit small but very clear and good colour and definitely very useable. I can see the tilting LCD being good for macro if the light's good but otherwise only useful for Menu setting. Maybe OK for video but I don't do that anyway! As for the extra reach of the lens it was not possible to assess with the limited hands on. I do find though the the 720mm reach on the Lumix is not really very good unless you use a tripod which I normally don't carry when hiking/cycling! I'd be surprised if the Nikon were any different. Regarding the RAW capabilities - I don't find it any use with the Lumix's and wouldn't expect to find it any better on the Nikons. Small sensors do not have enough dynamic range to enable one to extract information to enhance a shot. Blown highlights and dark shadows are still just that whether in RAW or Jpeg. There just isn't the data there! I haven't had an A900 but did look at them when buying my Lumix. As I said before the EVF is most important for me and the A900 doesn't have one. If I were in the market now I would certainly be considering the A1000 and comparing it to the latest Lumix TZ90 which has similar specs. Both are similarly priced here in Oz - $699. Cheers JohnR
