I love it when people ask about my camera ...
If a fool offered to buy it, I would ( for twice its price ! )
My favorite is the people who say, "That's a serious camera" To which I reply; 'No, it has a wonderful sense of humor, especially when I try to take certain pictures, then it just laughs at me"

   My fav reply! My camera laughs at me every other click!
I think all cameras should come with a man and a dog.
The man is there to feed the dog, and the dog is there to keep the man away from the camera !

You can pity them,be irritated or whatever, but realize it is perhaps the most common remark about photography that exists among the general population. It is meant as a compliment, accept it as such.A good friend with an old and inexpensive P&S said that to me not long ago, knowing i had used a bridge camera for a few shots i sent in an email. There is a possibility you really do have a better camera however. They mean well. Besides learning photography, i have spent some time learning how to propagate plants by other means than seeds. The right cutting, of the right plant, at the right time. Result..."You have a green thumb!". It irritated me until realizing they were simply mystified at the possibility of growing a plant by some method they had never learned. It is as common an expression, however, as that about your "really good camera". You can respond in some more kind way to the intended complement than using some sarcastic reply.
I always say, "It is not my camera, YOU are a great subject and really look good"

I was a little pissed when i shot a wedding this weekend and someone comes up to me and says they are buying my camera because it takes awesome pics. How come everyone thinks it is the camera and not the photographer? Oh well maybe it is just me i just felt insulted......
I've given this issue a lot of thought and have come to a comfortable place with it in my own mind as far as I'm concerned. I've decided that maybe those of us who have delved deeply into photography and availed ourselves of what is available in the form of enlightenment and developed to a sophisticated level within the limits of what the craft has to offer are often being a little too thin skinned.
I would suspect there aren't too many people who haven't made photos that were so badly composed that the subjects are all but virtually unrecognizable, all the while thinking, in their total ignorance, that it was totally up to the camera to capture the subject. When they see what they did and then what you do, the only explanation in their minds is that the difference must be in the quality of the camera and not knowing the difference, think that they are complimenting you when they say that stuff about 'you must have a nice camera.' I don't think the enlightened among us should be any more upset about that, or perceive it to be an insult any sooner than if and when children make ignorant comments to us about some other subject.
It has been suggested that the enlightened among us can afford to look upon ignorance with some level forgiving grace of our own and be big and smart enough to put the whole thing in perspective. I don't think some of us are capable of that and are hence displaying a form of blatant ignorance of our own. The people who say that are not intentionally overlooking your effort and insulting you - they simply do not know what's involved and do not know what to say but in fact, intend the comment as a compliment.
When faced with that comment, a little grace and humility would have us agree and say something like, "Yes, I'm sure am blessed," or "Yes, I'm so lucky," or "Yep, I sure got a good one alright." Instead, what do we do - we get insulted and it is absolutely not justified. That, if I recall my lil' pappy's teachings, is allowing our pride to get in the way of our respect for others, including the ignorant, and you know what they say about pride - "it cometh before a..." I think when we allow ourselves to have our feelings hurt over someone else's well-intentioned but ignorant remarks, we're being pretty ignorant ourselves. My $0.02.
Why does everyone get upset because they have a great camera? EVERYONE knows it's the camera and not the person behind the lens. I know that, that's why I buy the same gear that all the DSLR gurus have. Lessons? Composition? Rule of Thirds? Exposure? White balance? Who need 'em?! I have a great camera!
"Just don't judge me by my shoes."

My comment to those people is that "You can't fix Stupid," That same person would have asked for Leonardo da Vinci's brushes so they too could paint a "Mona Lisa!!!"
