Not even announced in the US yet. Only Europe, Asia, Australia, and Canada for now.

Still on pre order there.

Sounds like a decent travel camera, 4K video, tilting touchscreen, 16 MP, 35X optical zoom.

That optical zoom figures to be 24-840mm. According to the article. That's more than enough for a compact camera.

It sure is, it just depends what the photo's turn out like in full zoom.

It might make a great “glove box” camera...B&H says they do not have it on their radar yet.

If it is a good as my A900, it will be worth waiting for.

So how would it compare to the Coolpix 610 with 60x optical zoom?

I don't have that one so I can't fairly compare them.

It’s available for pre-order at Adorama, I have the A900 and I love it for a “pocket-throw in my purse” type of camera, it does not shoot raw, but the A1000 does shoot raw and has an electronic view finder, and a tilting touch screen. Sounds intriguing!

I do like my A1000. Yes it's a little on the heavy side, but the photos are really nice. I do love the EVF...took me a couple of days to adjust to it, but it's very convenient.
