I have an old EF35-105 from a 630 35MM film camera that I use on a 40D. Works
fine but on a cropped camera it is lacking wide angle, It is old and slow, just like
its owner.

I have a Tokina 12-24. That gets wide, it starts to give the fish eye effect at around 15mm. I tried it on a full frame 5d and it was obvious that this lens was designed for a C size sensor. Search around you might find it in the 3 -400 dollar range.
The Canon 28 prime lens is QUITE nice - Mine is a 1987 version that came with a 630 at a garage sale.
