Oh what a cutie! She really pops against that background. I like what you did with the gull as well. Nicely done.

thanks. Source image for the "cutie" is a few years old - one of my favorites. The source photo for the gull had a simply blue sky background and easy to integrate with revised background. The face cutout on the other one isn't as seamless with the background - maybe could have done more on that.

Thanks, Linda, for the opportunity to play a bit tonight! I am really drawn to DWU2's image, "Statue". The more I studied it, it looked like a man in the shower. Very powerful!
I tried a couple, very quickly done.

Great to see you, Carla. These look quite intriguing; however, they are very tiny - even smaller than the 600 px thumbnails when "store original" is not selected. Any chance you have larger file size? Appreciate your time and interest!

What app are you using to process your images?

I'll see what I can do. I didn't "store original" as so hastily done, I saw no benefit to see larger, I guess.

My aging eyes and 13" monitor appreciate Both are very cool, but that waterfall is mesmerizing! Thanks again, I'm very grateful you joined the thread, Carla.

I used photoshop.

For the gull image, I masked out the blue sky background on one layer. The replacement background was used on multiple other layers . Different stretches/distortions were applied via transpose. Different blend modes were used some layers.

For the other image, I first processed the background via NIK Analog EFEX filter using one of the double exposure presets. The "cutie pie" face was on the top layer with inner and outer glow effects applied.

As Linda mentioned, you can do all sorts of things to texture layers and use them accordingly. Desaturating them can let you use them very differently, as can enlarging, blurring or otherwise manipulating them.

These use all three textures Linda posted in order. The first is used after applying a gaussian blur (extreme) then used to tone a dull almost monochrome image. The second is desaturated, pinched, given extra contrast and applied with hard light blend mode to increase drama and weird lighting. The third is blurred with a circular bulls-eye radial blur.

None of these are great art by any means. But I would encourage you to experiment with your own textures using all the tools your software allows. You may find something wonderful.

These are great. The way you used the texture with the waterful is amazing.

Thank you, minniev, that is quite a complement! I agree with Richard that sometimes the hardest part is coming up with the idea, of seeing something beyond what is presented initially.
