Thanks Dave! Here is the original shot. I have two background layers, the first for texture (burled ash in black and white) and second for color with some curve adjustments and using the normal blend mode. My cattail photo is on top. I used Select Color Range to mask out the sky and used Pin Light as the blend mode. I chose the sky color then inverted it. I still had to do a little more clean up to the mask though. The blend mode is what allowed the background to come through the lighter parts of the cattails. Everything was at 100% opacity.

Thanks, did you combine the two background layers or leave them as separate layers during the process?

I apologize I told you wrong on the opacity. The color layer was at 40% opacity to allow the wood grain to show through.
