I'm going to attend a workshop 8/10-18 in Taos & Santa Fe. I want to spend some time in the vicinity either before, after, or both, and am looking for suggestions. I can fly to any airport within one or two days in any direction. I intend to spend time at the Petrified Forest and on the Turquoise Trail, and have been to the Grand Canyon. Other than that...well, that's why I'm writing. My initial plan was to fly to Albuquerque, but am looking for ideas before I book any flights.
Thanks all in advance.
David
Addendum: please keep in mind that this is August.
Bosque del Apache NWR 8 miles from Socorro is a highlight of the area if you are into shooting sandhill cranes and snow and Ross geese in their wintering quarters. Socorro is about 90 minutes at 70 mph from Albuquerque.
You might consider a day trip to Carlsbad Caverns. Six hours North is Colorado Springs with the Air Force Academy, Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak and numerous tourist attractions. An hour West on Highway 50 from Pueblo is the Canon City Prison Museum. Another eight miles West on 50 is Royal Gorge Park.

That gives a lot of options,DIA (Denver) is a one day drive. So are Tucson or Phoenix. Those two are a long day but on interstate Hwys so a comfortable drive. Since you say you can take up to two days from airport to workshop you have opened up a pretty unlimited list of opportunities. What would you most like to photograph/see? If you like birds, as has been mentioned Bosque Del Apache near Soccoro cant't be beat. The Wilcox AZ area is also good but August will be slim pickings for migratory flights. For scenery the drive from Phoenix can take you through Sedona then the painted desert. Or you could continue to Monument Valley (about 6 hours from there to Santa Fe).
The possibilities are end less and some guidance from you can help us help you.
Been to Mon Val in a workshop. Been to ALQ several times, yet not aware of Bosque del Apache until now. Wildlife in summer usually somewhere else or napping during heat of day.
Just hoping to get some triggering ideas.
I’ll filter. Laissez les bonne ideas rouler!
Consider the tram to the top of Sandia Peak in Albuquerque. Such a view!
I had the opportunity to see it in February one year. Got a few nice shots.
I loved Taos and Santa Fe also!
When I went onto the Reservation in Taos, I needed to purchase a camera pass.
Bandelier National Monument has many opportunities, just outside Los Alamos, NM

There are many varied opportunities in this area without driving huge distances. I'd suggest that you plan your extra days at the end of your workshop and plan them around what you can learn about opportunities that match your own interests. It is also likely that you will learn things during your workshop that will further shape your choices.

I was just going to suggest that myself. It's a great place that a lot of people miss.
Went to Chama, NM in October and took the Cumbres & Toltec Steam Train ride thru the mountains to Antonito, CO. It was well worth the trip and very enjoyable with lots of photo ops.

Good suggestions have already been offered. My favorite place to photograph when staying around Albuquerque is Acoma, also called Sky City. Check to be sure it’s not closed for a Feast Day, and buy a photography pass (just a few dollars), ask local residents for permission before taking their pictures, and enjoy some truly amazing opportunities. Look up Edward Curtiss’s historic photos before you go. Much of it is unchanged, but then it was unchanged for about 1000 years before he got there.
Last October, we went to the Cumbres & Toltec Steam Train in Chama, NM and spent a delightful day riding through the mountains to Antonito, CO. Great photo ops from the train.

In addition to all the above, Great Sand Dunes National Park. Rent an Jeep and do the Mendota Pass primitive road. I did not have to pay for a photo pass at the Taos Puebelo but was told to photo residents only with permission. Most did not give it. If you are into astrophotography there are a number of tours available out of Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Regardless of where you go in the region, you will not lack opportunity.
