This picture was taken handheld (resting on car door with window down) with a 55-250 mm lens on a Canon T3i camera this morning about 9 AM at Basket Slough National Wildlife Reserve near Dallas, Oregon. Weather was cold, sunny, and bright. Any suggestions or critiques are welcome.

f8, 1/500, ISO 400 Pretty solid set up. Other than driving the truck into the water to get closer, not much else. You were pushing the limits of your gear I think. I hope you don't mind, but I took the liberty to do a really quick crop and SLIGHT exposure adjustment. I realize this is to my liking and might not please everyone. Overall, for a "drive by" a pretty solid result IMHO

swartfort's crop shows the subject just slightly out of focus in the head area. The image data said you were using a 75-300 at full length, which would definitely be long distance and difficult to achieve focus on such a tiny area - but it's also possible that is just too far for your gear.

I can relate to attempting to shoot further than I probably should have I loved my T3i for four years and I had similar lens for two years (I'm thinking mine was 70-300 - a bit better quality).

You handled the exposure nicely and it's a pleasing composition. All the best for future bird hunting!

Thanks for the info and suggestions. I was pleased with this photo. Thought I used the 55-250 mm but may have been the 75-300 mm. I was using both this morning and may not have remembered correctly. I would estimate the distance as about 50 yards. About 9 AM. The cropping suggestion is good. I thought about posting a cropped copy but wanted to post my original pic instead. I am still learning and appreciate your thoughts and comments.

I really think the "out of focus" issue is a lens softness issue that is exacerbated (yes I used that big word) by the distance. I'm not sure with that combination of equipment you could have really expected much better. All gear has limits somewhere....
