OLympus TG5

In that environment batteries drain quickly. I hope she has a great experience.

Thanks everyone!

It looks like the Olympus Tough series as it by a very large margin.

A solar powered battery/charger combination might be handy, they come in many sizes, and someone should have a SAT phone, but I'm sure they already thought of that. The TG-5 sounds like a great choice.

How about an Olympus Tough TG 5 camera? She is going into an often unkind, unpredictable climate. Weather proof, water proof and tough in harsh climates. Can get bounced around and still function. Probably small enough to put in a jacket pocket. Check it out at BH- now 449.00. Can probably get the earlier model from Ebay for a good deal.

PS- Has compass, GPS, video

I had a student that has one of these. Absolutely a must camera for rough outdoor conditions, and simple to use. She will also need a spare battery and a solar charger

Just an oddball questions for you and the others on this thread: Has anyone used or know of someone that has used these cameras (tough/weatherproof/etc.) at high altitudes, say 20,000'+ ? And if so, what were their results? chase

Regarding cameras such as the tough camera, I remember reading an article, but don't remember the source. The article mentioned that cameras such as these should have their seals checked and possibly replaced once a year. Do any hoggers have thoughts on this?

Yep, I have several older models of these "tough/underwater" cameras and most manufactures make this recommendation.

20,000'+??
No, why? I guess I am assuming a lot, since this camera will withstand going down 50 feet underwater. Do you have any specific concerns? If so, what?

Yes, I believe these cameras were designed for inceased pressures but perhaps not designed or tested for greatly decreased pressures. Just guessin' here as some gaskets are designed for one way only. They might need some mininal amount of pressure to seal properly. chase

You could email Olympus customer service. I bet they’d know. I’ve only used my TG4 in rain and cold snowy weather. My kids older tough cameras I’ve used under water (swimming pools).

I don't own one but I am a Pilot. As you increase in altitude your airpressur decreases. The actual picture functions don't care about altitude or pressure. But as a precaution I would open the battery compartment every 5000' or so going both up and down to equalize the pressure. Most newbe pilots learn this lesson the hard way when they take their trusty thermos bottle on a flight. I have used my film cameras as high as 40,000 unpressurised without any problems.

KEH.com has a couple of them (TG-5) listed for $328 (Excellent +, which, in my experience with them, means that you won't be able to tell that they are not new).
