You were lucky. And as far as “sending money overseas”, most of the parts in those Cadillacs are made in Japan, Korea or China.
Obviously he has never had a Cadillac Cimmaron

Hi Mark. I have a 1999 Honda Odyssey with 129,000 miles. It beats almost any SUV for hauling stuff. Had 44 bags of mulch in it last year. No problem.
We've got 183,000 on our 2003 Odyssey and have also hauled a lot, including our pop-up camping trailer. It has been the most reliable car we've ever owned, admittedly only slightly better than our Mazdas. Our '06 Mazda 3 has 169,000 miles and still has the original brake pads and clutch (and it lives in Bay Area traffic); it's also fun to drive. One nice thing about our Mazda 3 is that it has a timing chain rather than a belt.
My feeling is to buy a car with good reliability and don't buy the extended warranty.
