Lightroom and Facebook

I have Lightroom CC and when I try to setup preferences to publish photos on Facebook through Lightroom, I get a prompt within Lightroom that says you can no longer post photos on Facebook through Lightroom desktop. Can someone shed more light on this subject?

The big boys (Apple, Microsoft, Google/YouTube, Instagram, Facebook) don't often play well together.

Lightroom Classic CC can sync photos to Lightroom CC. Photos in Lightroom CC on a computer WILL BE synced to Lightroom Android or iOS on your phone. From the phone is an active link to Facebook.

The other computer based choice is to save a JPEG from either Lightroom and use the computer browser based Facebook uploader.

While I never used that LR interface and preferred to export and post, what is the reason it was discontinued? Just curious.

I think it had to do with codes

Amazing! I guess this is the final nail in the coffin of quality.

Let's be reasonable. FB is free and I would hate to estimate the server farms they have to host all posts to including photos. To allow pictures of all sizes to be posted would slow FB to a bloody crawl while costing zillions more for space. It's a social network, not a professional photo warehouse.

FB is not the tool to show the highest quality. There are lots of places that allow better quality to be posted but you only get so much free and then you pay your share!

FB could do what UHH does and resize large images automatically. If not automatically, just set a size limit, as they probably already have. I just posted three 1.5 MB JPEGS here, and it worked fine.

As you said, FB is for socializing, more than showing off high quality images. Still, a bit of processing wouldn't hurt.

My understanding is that it's a FB thing. My website used to automatically post new uploads to my FB page. As of Aug. 1, 2018, FB blocks all apps from posting to your page. You have to post it yourself. It's a security thing on the part of FB. LR can prepare the image for posting, but it cannot actually post the image.

I've never used that function on LR, because uploading from within FB is so easy. Too bad for those who like to do it from their end, but I agree with the reasons others have mentioned. Speed, security, etc.

If it was simply space one would not be able to still put pictures on. It was something to do with the various security breaches they were having. One can still export to a JPEG file and add that way. I have been doing it this way for almost a year

A.T.,
I appreciate your inquiry and I'm sure many others do upload images to FB from software programs. Personally, other than Windows Explorer, I never upload images from any software processing program. My images are stored on a dedicated internal 4 TB drive. To upload to FB, I simply navigate to the image on my internal drive and click it. Done! It takes a few seconds. Of course there is most likely a difference in my work flow for processing images than yours. I process in Photoshop CC 2019 and save the image to a folder on my dedicated image drive. I do use LR to browse. I also use FastStone and Bridge. My "system" of processing and storing images is not optimized. It's a convoluted system only I understand. I'm not a professional and have never made a dime from my photography. I do post many images on FB to share with friends and family.

Jeffrey Friedl offers a number of Lightroom plug-ins, including one that's supposed to be able to do Facebook uploads:

http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies

I've never used his Facebook plug-in, but have and use a couple others for uploading to other sites. They work pretty well.

EDIT.... I just looked closer at Friedl's Facebook plug-in and saw this info:

"As of August 1, 2018, Facebook revoked photo-upload privileges for all non-browser desktop apps like Lightroom, from uploading to personal pages. It's still possible (at this point) to upload to non-personal pages like business and community pages."
