Almost all of my lenses I bought on eBay. I only ever got one bad lens. It saw it as a bonus on the body and other items in the auction. Well it wasn't the bonus I thought it would be. Turns out it needed and expensive repair, so it collects dust now. Other than that my experience on eBay has been very good. My only advice is to cehck the seller closely and read between the lines. A seller who has say primarily clothing and a lens or body. May not be aware of the photography items condition. Watch for I'm selling this for my friend, aunt uncle etc. Description may be lacking. There are good deals to be had just don't jump in with both feet.

I echo this plus I never buy from any seller who will not accept returns.

A 50mm is a 50mm no matter what . It is too wide for portraiture. The 80-105 lenses have shorter depth of field.

To a certain extent that's correct as far as DOF issues. But my Canon with the smaller sensor will have a 1.6 x factor on focal length. So a 50mm becomes an 80mm. The old rules are that an 80mm at say f4 will have less DOF than than the 50mm. Not so. The DOF will be the same. So with the cropped sensor you need to go longer as far as focal length to achieve the effect of "dropping" the background out of focus. It's hard to explain and I'm sure I did a poor job. Best head and shoulder shots are normally taken with the 85mm to 135mm range lenses. I loved my Nikkor 105mm for those type shots.

Hi Linda:
Ebay is a great place to bid on good used camera lenses.
There's always a chance you can get burned but buyer protection is included. Also, if a seller gets a poor review of a sale they can be banished from ever selling so the chances are slim.
I think the fun part of the bidding process is when the bidding gets down to 5 minutes or so to see if your bid is the winner.
Research is the best teacher. Know what you want and why you want it. If you take your time you will find someone, somewhere who will let go of good glass for a very good price. Not everyone is looking for what you want.
Good luck.

I have bought most of my lenses on eBay and have never had a problem. You have to ask the seller the right questions though. Make sure you understand the quality, the warranty,if there is any internal dust or fungus, if it is grey market, etc. this way your questions and the sellers answers are documented in case you have a problem. Make sure you pay with PayPal. They will back you up if you have a problem and you have the condition of the item documented. Do not buy memory cards on eBay. That is one item you cannot trust.

Hi photo friends. I so enjoy my UHH over morning coffee. Thanks to all. My question today is whether or not many of you have purchased camera equipment, specifically lenses on eBay? I'm interested in purchasing a Canon 85mm 1.8...I can't afford the L series, but have heard good things about the lower priced model, too. Thanks for your thoughts.

I bought a few from near 100% positive feedback sellers on eBay. I only buy them if they have a warranty or return policy. So far,I have been pleased.

I've bought several lenses on eBay, but was always very careful to buy from a seller who was well-established and had a good record. If you have questions, whether it is grey-market, etc., a legitimate seller will be happy to answer. I almost always try to buy lenses in "mint" or "like new" condition if possible, even if it means paying a little more (but be sure to know the price it should sell for ahead of time as bids can go much higher than they should). If possible, ask the seller to ship with front and rear lens caps if not in the original box. I had one lens where the bubble wrap left permanent marks on the rear element because it was taped on so tightly.

Hello Linda

If I were you I would buy the Canon 85mm f1.8 Len’s it's a good lens the price is around new $369.00 from Canon and I think it’s the same from B&H too.
The L lens is much more expensive may be over your budget!

Thank you...I think my Interest in the 85 comes from many positive reviews about the clarity of a prime and the 85 seems to be popular. I have the 28-135 (rated just ok by the experts) but it is my walking around lense. I mainly shoot my grandkids/family and landscapes when I'm in a beautiful location. I'm just wondering if the 85 would be a good addition to my small lense collection, but don't want to be redundant. Thanks. Linda
