This obviously is not a good photo, but this is what she sent. She is wanting to see if anyone can maybe identify this bird. It is in the rafters of her barn where she has horses. The location is in the northern part of South Carolina if that helps any.
Northern Flicker, a woodpecker
Okay... that's what we were thinking....but she had a few people say otherwise....another reason the UHH is great...thanks Tom.. and Janet also says thanks.
They used to be called Red Shafted Flickers and there is another version called a Gilded Flicker. But there looks like a hint of a red in that tail feather rather than a hint of gold - you see the red or the yellow more when it is flying than when it is huddled sitting on top of a beam. when things are renamed like these were the old names persist by those of us who learned to identify them by another name.
Kestral now used to be Sparrow Hawk
Northern Harrier used to be a Marsh Hawk
Common Galinule now used to be a Common Moor Hen
Always fun to see Woodpeckers.
