Your only problem is you can’t wrap your head around the fact that this has gone on for decades and across presidents and congresses of both parties.

Like almost all issues, the SS Trust Fund is complicated.
What would you have them do with the excess funds collected by SS? They bought US bonds, the proceeds from the bonds was spent as with all proceeds from bonds with the promise to pay back.
Imagine what would happen to the value of the dollar if in fort Knox ( or some place of your choosing) piles of Dollars or Gold in an ever increasing amount accumulated from the surplus until like now they draw it down to pay the difference from the amount collected.
You must think a bit I know it is more difficult than just repeating something you read or saw on TV

Taxation of social security benefits began under the administration of Ronald Reagan in the 1983-1984 timeframe. That is a fact.
Payments into social security from workers paychecks has never been an allowable tax deduction. The original law passed under a democratic president did not provide for such a deduction. That is a fact.

I also used my late fathers SS survivor benefits ~$58/month ( a lot of money then) to supplement my income from part time jobs to pay my way through GT.
I am not aware of any legislation that got passed that slashed SS, can you help out and advise what anybody did or that Ex-speaker Ryan pushed through to slash SS?
He did try to point out that as configured SS is not sustainable long term and that is a problem isn't it?
