Working/Non-Working CD

This is an odd one. I bought a CD from a musician, and it played one track in my car and then ejected. It was the same in my computer. I contacted the seller, and he sent me another CD after testing it in his own player. Same result - playing just the first track. He also sent me a link to download all the music, so I have it.

Another strange thing - although the computer would not play the CD, iTunes was able to extract each tune. I've never run across a situation like this before. Any ideas what's going on?

Perhaps the cd was not burned as a music cd, rather as a file system disk with mp3 files?

Are you asking about a commercially made metal coated "mirrored" CD or a homemade "burned" CD-R?

Yes, I've had CD-Rs go bad after a few years. Especially ones from many years ago. They seem to be more "stable" today. As to commercial CDs. Yikes, I own close to 3,000 music CD-albums! I do buy many used yet seldom have problems. What you described I have had happen with scratched CDs or ones with other mirror "drop outs". In fact just a few days ago I received a used Joni Mitchell 2CD set ("Shadows and Light") with some scratches on Disc 1. I was able to Rip a copy to my HDD successfully and if need be burn a CD-R copy of that disc 1 if the original will not play in my car or other CD audio players. When copying it will attempt to read and re-read any damaged or dirty areas to get all the audio data it can. The problem on my Joni Mitchell disc seems to be all in one longer song. I noticed the machine took a long to rip that song. Probably because it was re-sampling over and over the poor or damaged area. I've found scratches have to be really bad to keep a CD disc from playing. I do have one CD with some dirt or hair that was embedded in the disc surface when it was manufactured. It was right in the middle of a live "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" by the Allman Brother Band. Darn! This disc will not play thru the "gunk" and just stops there. I have to advance it a few seconds to hear the rest of the song.

So, check your disc for scratches, hairs, dirt, smudges, and be sure it is clean. You may need a new copy or make a new copy.

I just remembered something that might be (more) related. I can't explain your computer CD / DVD - R/W whatever player not liking the disc. My Dell system plays anything and everything CD / DVD. This is a Win 10 system. Are you using a PC or Mac or a non-standard O/S? It is possible some players may need specifically formatted mp3 discs (or other formats?).

I've found that mp3 disc will not play in my 2006 Mazda 6's CD-player, but commercial and self burned Audio-CD disc will fine. I looked in my car's owners manual and yes there is a section on the use of mp3 formatted discs. Yikes, it was way over my head and yet I'm sure it is totally different from what my PC does and my own players need. Mazda cars are a bit weird in other ways as well. Luckily I rarely burn music to mp3 even though one can put a lot on mp3 songs on a disc. I make Audio-CD discs that should be a compatible as commercial CDs. Do note for reference that there are older commercial albums with multimedia content that will not play on today's OS's or machines and players. Occasionally the entire disc acts crazy and you have to trick the PC into playing it. Some "extra" content I've never seen as it was an "obsolete" disc format when I bought it. Would need 16-bit Windows or worse! Good luck.

p.s. What sort of music does the fellow play? Worth hearing?

This is a regular, commercially made CD.

Ukulele - Paul Hemmings. I've bought other CDs from hm, and they work fine. I'll try to find another CD player and see if it works.

The CD's were likely not finalized as the last step in copying whatever material went onto the CD. They'll play on the equipment that the musician who made the copies uses, but the only way it will play on your equipment, is if the CD is finalized by the person who copied it. If there's a way to return the CD's to the musician who originally made them, then have him finalize those CD's on the same gear that he made the copies on, the CD's will likely play fine on your gear. This isn't an issue with commercially produced CD's.

This is getting confused.

Were the CDs the musician sent commercially made AUDIO CDs, or were they burned by the musician?

Open (not PLAY, just OPEN to view the files)the "bad" CDs on your computer (and see what kind of files are on it.
Audio CD files have extension .CDA, and should play on a computer or audio CD player.

If they are .MP3 files, they will play on a computer, and a CD player (car or home) that is MP3-COMPATIBLE.
What are you trying to play them on?

Oh, yes, that is the likely issue. I should have thought of and suggested that a while back. I've gotten ones from others like that at times. A big pain in the a...
