On the Dell Web site, it shows this model has a solid state drive. Does anyone else
think that the standard configuration with 8mb memory may not be enough? It handles up to 32 mb.

Memory on these is non-removable - and 8 is not nearly enough for photoshop or other bitmap editors, and it is barely enough to run just lightroom. And you saw an XPS 15 2 in 1 with 32 gb ram?

I am not familiar with Windows 10 pro...is it very different from the home version? I am going to upgrade to the 1tb SSD and the 16g ram. Wish it had the 32g but that is not available and even if it was I probably wouldn't be able to afford it lol.

Windows 10 Professional does have some real benefits. The biggest are around better networking functionality and flexibility.

The 4k monitor is included in the price. I think the only customized upgrades that upped the price I made were the 1tb SSD and the i7 processor. I also am getting the pen that goes with this.

It sounds like you're getting a great computer. I think you've done your research well. Just don't rely on your 1TB SSD as your major storage device. Be sure to get a couple of SSD backup drives as well, unless you already have them. At this point, I'd get my order in and get the computer. BTW, purchasing from Dell as one advantage. At least as of 2014, they would send repairmen to your home as long as it was under warranty. They would determine the problem, order parts and return to install the parts. Be sure to get the three year extended warranty.

I'm not sure if you use MS Office. On my last purchase I made the mistake of not getting MS Office Professional. Excel just does not work the same on the home edition as on pro. If that doesn't matter to you, don't worry about it.

I have Microsoft office home on my current computer (monthly subscription) and that works fine for me. I don't use it much. I do not currently have any back up hard drives...I figure I will cross that bridge when it becomes necessary.

The model I am looking out does not support 32g. 16 is the highest you can get at this time.

You can do better:

https://www.xoticpc.com/msi-we63-8si-239.html?startcustomization=1

MSI motherboard and 8th Gen i7-8750 6 core 12 thread cpu
32 gb ram
NVidia Quatro P1000 with 4 GB vram - 30 bit color graphics card (for better support of wide gamut displays)
1Tb m.2 NVMe PCIe
2 TB SSHD hybrid Seagate FireCuda 2.5" drive
Windows 10 Pro
3 yr Parts and Labor/Lifetime free tech support

$1877.92

I have directly purchased or had others purchase from Xotic for the past 6 years - they are a solid company that stands behind what they sell - they also have some possibly lower cost gaming laptops using Sager motherboards. These are what I have purchased in the past, and my be all you need. Aside from the company, I like buying laptops with some degree of user-upgradeability. These allow you to buy a system that will accommodate up to 64 gb ram, and up to 4 onboard storage devices. The Sager notebooks have particularly nice looking screens for photo editing.

I am going to recommend against getting a laptop that has only 16 gb ram that is not upgradeable. File sizes are getting bigger, software is always going to demand more and ram is one of the first places you will hit a bottleneck. I consider 16 gb entry level, 32 appropriate for most, and up to 64 for power users doing a lot of HDR, compositing, focus stacking and large pano merging.

You may find that photo editing with a touch screen is not to your liking. I prefer using a separate, much more accurate Wacom input tablet. I tried using a Surface and hated the experience. But your mileage may vary.

Thank you for the option...I will look into it. I really just do basic editing and don't do any hdr or focus stacking or pano. I may at some point in the future like to try hdr but my current camera does not bracket so it would be hard to do.

You would have been better off getting a 556 gigabyte SSD drive and use it as your working drive and use the savings to get backup drives and use them for storage. But, you've got to have more than one. If, for some reason your SSD drive crashes you will have lost everything. As it is, I still have photos on the hard drive of my last computer that died due to a bad graphics card that I had not backed up. I need to remove the hard drive and retrieve those photos. If you manually back up your photos to the hard drives, you can always access them. Backup drives are not that expensive.

I probably will look into buying one. I use one drive which is a cloud type storage so everything I save is also saved in there. I can access it on any device I load it one which is very useful and will male transferring all my work to the new computer super easy.

I am looking into buying a new laptop because my old one is not able to handle Lightroom or Photoshop very effectively. So far the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 seems to be the best for the price and funtionality. I really like that it can function as a tablet and make use of a pen. My main question is does anybody on here have one and what are your opinions on it. Thanks for any info.

I purchased the XPS-15 with 32gig of ram and SSD a little over a year ago, it also has the 4K screen. I believe it was the top model of the XPS-15 at the time. It has been a great machine so far with zero problems, and serves me very well for all my photo editing needs.
In your post you mentioned the price of the machine your looking at and I think it may be worth your while to watch for the sales at Costco. This machine was on sale for $500.00 off in November of 2017. In addition to the upfront savings, you can get your warranty extended to three years instead of one if you purchase with a Costco credit card.
You will love the 4K screen, the color and resolution are superb.

To the OP, I spent some time with this computer as one demonstrated its ability to do PS and LR--it looked really good and I was already to buy one, but then Costco had a Dell 15, the xps 9560 which was cheaper and pretty much would do what I want. The one I bought (which probably isn't as good as the one you are looking at) does very well with my 5dsr files (which are pretty big) and can even work with Sony a7riii uncompressed raw files, which can be huge. It does slow down a bit with the latter, but for a pc that I could plug right in and use, I am very happy with it.

Thank you for the response. I shoot with a d3300 so the files are not super huge.

You should be good with what you are looking at.

Two weeks ago I bought a much less expensive Dell Inspiron w/16gb memory, probably a slower I7 processor and graphic card than you are looking at.

I do most of my stuff on a desktop, but had to play with my new toy. It handles files from a D850 with know problem. By comparison you are looking at a dream machine and should have no problem with your configuration.

I never purchased directly from Dell. When I bought my HP desktop a friend recommended I configure what I want online, wait for a sale and then call and ask if they can beat the sale price. Without hesitation they knocked $250 off the price and threw in a 3 year in home warranty. If you go with the Dell a phone call might be worth a shot.
